create and engage in flexible, digital learning spaces with Edmodo.

We will be answering two essential questions as you complete the units

in this course:

1. How does Edmodo create a community of learning?

2. How can Edmodo create new learning opportunities for educators and
students?

This course can be completed at your own pace and is designed to take up to
a total of 2 hours.

1.1 Welcome to your Edmodo Home Page!

Edmodo provides flexible digital spaces for educators to connect and engage
their 21st-century students in a meaningful learning community. With more
than 100 million users from 110 countries, educators can be a part of this
greater global learning community or can create their own private learning
communities for their students and colleagues.

The Home page on Edmodo has a familiar feeling to other social networking

platforms with its top navigation bar, left side panels of classes and
groups, and the center stream of posts. On the Home page you can see
posts from Edmodo's global community of educators, your teacher
connections, and your classes and groups in chronological order with the
latest post listed at the top of the stream.

The Profile page is divided up into the Main Profile, Class Activity,

and Connections sections.

Click on Classes to navigate to the Class Management page, What's Due, and Progress area.

On the Class Management page, you can see upcoming quizzes and assignments, add or join a
class, and access other menu options for managing your classes.

In the Discover area of Edmodo, access collections of featured content, educational

games.
In the Library, add files and folders, as well as connect your OneDrive or Google
Drive.

1.2 - Community Communication

How do we communicate with educator communities on
Edmodo?
With 110 million users on Edmodo from over 100 countries, a meaningful connection is
just a post away. Educators on Edmodo can share resources, request assistance, and find
collaborators. Posting to Edmodo's global community is a simple, yet effective way to
communicate on Edmodo.

Creating a Post is one way to communicate with your students, colleagues, and fellow
educators from around the world. To create an effective post, you will need to consider
your audience, message, and response:

1. Identify your audience: Are you writing to your sixth grade students or to a group
of fellow teachers in a Group or hashtag community? You choose who sees your
post by selecting the audience in the menu or by writing a post in your Group or
Class home stream. Your message style and voice will change depending on your
audience.

2. Have a message goal in mind: Are you providing a resource, asking for

assistance, or sharing an accomplishment? Clearly communicate your goal. If you
have more than one goal for your message, be sure the goals relate to each
other. For example, you may want to share a resource and ask for feedback on it.
Having too many ideas or goals in your post will muddle your message.
3. Respond to comments: Communication is a two-way street; if someone take the
time to comment on your post, be sure you "Like" or reply to the comment. This
creates a sense of community and builds trust between you and your students,
colleagues, or fellow teachers.

We will be examining posting to your classes in a later section in the course. For now,
let's explore how to communicate with other educators.

Anatomy of a Post
After a post is created, it will appear in the stream with all the information you added and
selected.

Review this annotated screenshot of a Post on Edmodo.

If you
are the

author
of the
post,
you will
be able
to link to the post, add the post to the library, turn on notifications, edit and delete the
post.

If you are not the author of the post, you will be able to access the link to the post, add
the post to your Library, and turn on notifications for the post.

Every post on Edmodo has a unique URL which enables you to share the post within
Edmodo or externally. All posts are, by default, private. Providing a URL of the post to a
person who is not a member the Class or Group will not enable them to view the post.

Here is the message of the post, including hashtags and any links.
Hashtags (#) are a labeling system that make it possible for other teachers to see posts
on Edmodo. Simply type the # symbol in your post and use a relevant topic tag. If a
teacher is following the hashtag you used, your post will appear in their Home stream if
you include them in your audience.

Note: Strategically use hashtags to ensure the right audience sees your post. If you
want to communicate with Algebra teachers, try #algebra. Using too broad a hashtag,
such as #math, will send your post to people who may not be interested in that specific
message.

When composing a post, consider the following:

1. Identify your audience.

Are you writing to your sixth grade students or to a group of fellow teachers in a Group
or hashtag community? You choose who sees your post by selecting the audience in
the menu or by  writing a post in your Group or Class home stream. Your message style
and voice will change depending on your audience.
2. Have a message goal in mind.
Are you providing a resource, asking for assistance, or sharing an accomplishment?
Clearly communicate your goal. If you have more than one goal for your message, be
sure the goals relate to each other. For example, you may want to share a resource and
ask for feedback on it. Having too many ideas or goals in your post will muddle your
message.

Select Your Audience

To create a post from your Home page, you'll need to select the audience you intend to
reach.

 Any teacher on Edmodo: All teachers with Edmodo accounts will be able to see
and interact with your post.

 Any teacher at your school: Only teachers at your school will be able to see and
interact with your post.

 Your Connections: Only your teacher connections will be able to see and interact
with your post.
Adding Hashtags to your Post
Hashtags (#) make it possible for other teachers to see posts on Edmodo. Simply type
the # symbol in your post and use a relevant topic tag. If a teacher is following the
hashtag you used, your post will appear in their Home stream if you include them in
your audience.

Note: Strategically use hashtags to ensure the right audience sees your post. If you want
to communicate with Algebra teachers, try #algebra. Using too broad a hashtag, such as
#math, will send your post to people who may not be interested in that specific message.
Following Hashtags
You can follow hashtags to see posts on topics that interest you and to connect with
other educators who have similar interests. When you follow a hashtag, any post using
the hashtag will appear in your Home stream. You can also unfollow a hashtag to
prevent these posts from appearing in your stream as well.

There are two ways to locate hashtags to follow:

1. Explore available hashtags in the "My Hashtags" section of the left panel. Click the +
Follow button to follow the hashtag.

2. Discover hashtags used in posts in your Home stream. Click the hashtag to filter your
stream, then click the + Follow button at the top of the page.

Reviewing Community Guidelines

At Edmodo, we aim to create a safe and friendly community for all users from teachers to
students to parents. To ensure your community conversations are productive and
valuable, we've outlined how to participate as a member in the Edmodo community.

 Sincerity is the heart of our community. We believe that educators (and people
in general) are more accountable for their statements and actions when they use
their authentic identities. Don't misrepresent yourself or mislead anyone about
your qualifications.

 Help maintain a supportive community where others feel comfortable to share,

learn and grow. As a global network of educators, members of our community
represent a diverse range of opinions and experiences. It's ok to debate and
disagree--that's an important part of learning--but please respect others' views,
opinions and contributions by expressing your own opinions with civility.
 Keep your content professional, relevant, and on-topic. We want to ensure that
our community is valuable to all participants. We ask that posts and comments
stay relevant to the topic discussed and to the hashtag(s) in which they are
posted. Don't share false information, chain letters, or spam.

 Keep promotions relevant to education. We encourage you to share your work

and promote materials created by educators for educators, such as blogs, books,
free and paid resources, etc. However, the Edmodo community should note be
used for commercial activity.

 Respect others, the law, and Edmodo. We do not tolerate harassment, abuse,
hate speech, and bullying. Please respect copyrights, trademarks, and others'
legal rights. It is not acceptable to suggest that you are endorsed by or affiliated
with Edmodo when you are not. Please review out Terms of
Service and Acceptable Use Policy for more information on what you can and
can't do with and on Edmodo services.

1.3 - Accounts on Edmodo

Who is on Edmodo?
There are three types of accounts on Edmodo: teachers, students,
and parents. The capabilities of each depend on the type of account. While
you will primarily be using a teacher account, you may find it helpful to
learn how students and parents use Edmodo as well.
Read the following infographic to get an overview of what each account
type CAN and CANNOT do.
Co-teachers can also be added to Edmodo Classes. Student accounts cannot
be given co-teacher access. You must have a Teacher Account to be given co-
teacher access to a class.

Co-teachers have all the same abilities as the owner except the following:

1. Archive or delete a Class/Group

2. Upgrade another teacher to co-teacher status

3. Remove the creator from the Class/Group

Class Overview
Where do teachers and students interact?
With Edmodo Classes, teachers have the tools to share class materials,
assess student learning, keep parents updated, and build vibrant classroom
communities.  Classes are enclosed communities where teachers and
students can communicate, participate in discussions, and complete
assessments.

Teachers can create small groups within their classes to differentiate

instruction and capitalize on personal interactions with students. Small
groups are great for ongoing projects, gamification, and differentiated
instruction. Just as teachers can assign Quizzes and Assignments to the
main class, so too, can teachers assign Quizzes and Assignments to students
in a small group.

But Classes aren't just for teachers and students. Teachers can engage
in professional development by joining a class as a teacher member. As
you continue this course, we will be taking a deeper dive into the
functionality of Edmodo Classes.

To gain an introduction to Edmodo Classes, take a guided tour of the

Edmodo Certified Learner Class. The Edmodo Certified Learner Class is a
sandbox class where you can practice navigating to small groups, posting,
taking quizzes, and completing assignments.

Class Engagement
How can we create an engaging digital classroom space on
Edmodo?
Classes are at the heart of Edmodo. In this unit, we will take a deeper dive into Edmodo
Classes by examining a sample class.

Track and Reward Performance

How can we track and reward student
performance?
As your learners engage with activities in class, Edmodo provides ways for
you to keep track of their progress and reward their performance.

What's Due
What's Due shows you a list of all Assignments and Quizzes you've sent in
your Classes and Groups. From this view, you can see how
many submissions each task has, along with how many learners
have viewed the task.

To navigate to What's Due, click or hover on the Classes tab, then select

What's Due from the navigation menu. You can then filter by Class or
Group (or view "All my classes") and filter by Assignment or Quiz (or view
"All Work").
What's Due: All my classes

Progress
Progress shows you a gradebook interface for each of your Classes and
Groups. Assignments and Quizzes will automatically populate your
gradebook, and you can manually add grade columns as well.

Within Progress, you can select the Class, Group, or Small Group whose

gradebook you'd like to see. You can create multiple grading periods, which
will provide separate percentage totals for different ranges of time. You can
also export your gradebook into a CSV file, to use alongside other gradebook
systems. Finally, you can award Badges to provide an exciting incentive that
students can display on their Edmodo profile page. You can use the existing
set of badges, or create your own!

To navigate to Progress for your classes, click or hover on the Classes tab,
then select Progress from the navigation menu. You can then select to
view Grades or Badges:

Educational Content and Resources

Where can we access, curate, and share
educational content?
Edmodo provides teachers with a space to curate personal and shared files
in the Library, as well as the ability to locate new resources
in Discover. Students are able to store files in their Backpack and access
content in Discover.

Library
Your Library has unlimited storage, however, no single item may be over
100MB. You can access your files from anywhere via the web or Edmodo's
iOS and Android mobile app, organize them in Folders and sub-Folders, and
share resources with your students. Similar to the Edmodo Library, students
are also able to store files in their Edmodo Backpack and access the shared

folders in their class.

Shared Folders
Once you've created your folders, you can easily share them with any
Class/Group that you own or are a co-teacher in.

Discover
Discover is a space on Edmodo where teachers and students can find free,
high-quality educational resources such as activities, apps,
and games that are shared by the Edmodo teacher community and our
trusted education partners.
On the Discover page, teachers and students can access educational content such as
resources, games, and apps.
