February, 2021

Jack and Annie, from our Magic Tree House series, are venturing into the
Amazon rainforest to find another one of the four things they need to free the Master
Librarian, Morgan le Fay. They received a moonstone from the Ninja Master in Japan.
The students are excited to go on these adventures with Jack and Annie each day, and
they love the character Peanut the mouse! The students are writing longer messages,
and they are using more vocabulary from the Power points and books. Students are
encouraged to write another sentence, add sounds, and add more detail to their
pictures!

I am excited this month to have some Valentine fun! We will not be able to
distribute cards, but will have some engaging activities! Look for a “create your own
Valentine” Seesaw activity during the week of 2/8. I would like to compile each
student's creation from Seesaw and then share it with the whole class. After vacation,
we will attend school as a whole class! In-person learning will be Tuesday through
Friday for everyone! On Mondays, we will still engage in Remote Learning. Please
continue to be diligent about monitoring your child’s health as we will be approximately
3-4 from each other to fit the 20 students in the classroom. It has been very helpful to
have the students pack extra masks in case they are needed. I do have extra in the
room should a student need one. Also, after vacation we are very excited to celebrate
our 100th day of school!

What We Are Doing

School:
What Reading & Writing Skills are being practiced?

We continue to focus our literacy skill building on the critical skill of word building using
familiar word patterns like, _an, _ike, _ing. For example, ring, sing, wing- they all end with “ing.” We
will use our knowledge of these patterns as we move into decoding texts. In addition, writing
continues to happen multiple times a day and we are seeing wonderful growth in this area. Please
continue to work on letter identification, letter sounds, segmenting, blending sounds to read
words, and rhyming. Assessments will be given after vacation.

In Fundations, we are working on Unit Three. We will continue to tap out sounds and build
cvc words (consonant-vowel-consonant words). We will start to formally teach sight words
(Fundations calls them trick words). As we teach the words, we will send home a sheet with the
words for Monday. They are all listed on the class web site also. Students will also focus on spelling
and dictation of cvc words. We continue to have story time with the Fundations owls- Mama Echo
and Baby Echo! Unit Two assessments went really well in class- I sent home a copy of your child’s
assessment in January. Continue to practice proper formation of the letters.

What Math Skills are being practiced?

We have been working on number formation, addition and subtraction. Students are
gaining a stronger number sense while participating in math activities in the classroom. We also
have been working with 2D and 3D shapes. This month we continue to work on addition,
subtraction, and collecting data. Please continue to work with your child on number
identification, forming numbers correctly, and counting to 100! Assessments will be given
after vacation.

Home Extensions:

● Read together every night and look for common “patterns” in words. Can
your child read the CVC words to you?
● Listen to your child read the books from his/her book bag. Ask him/her
questions about what is happening in the story.
● Build something together and ask questions about where something is… Is it
above, below, on the right or left?
