1) Before reading the article, the author thought understanding the self was redundant and irrelevant to their course, but now understands it's significantly related and helps understand future clients. 2) Three unclear parts were: how self-esteem relates to identity and action, what processes the inclusion-exclusion model predicts, and the differences between "me" and "us" perspectives across cultures. 3) The author wants to ask questions about whether the self has a deeper meaning, how understanding the self affects identity, and how understanding identity affects the nature of the self.

1. What are the three (3) things that you significantly learned from the reading? Please start

by saying ' Before reading the article, I used to think that (insert thought). After reading

the article, I now think that (insert thought)'.

Before reading the article, I used to think that the concept of learning self

and identity is quite redundant for this has been taught since throughout my

elementary and high school. I also thought that it was insignificant and irrelevant

because my course has nothing to do with understanding about my self

After reading the article, I now think that understanding the self and

identity has a significant relation through myself and my course. I learned that

knowing each concepts of self and identity such as how it affects my action would

open my mind for understanding each my clients in the future.

2. What three (3) things about the reading are unclear to you?

First thing that was unclear to me was when the book explained that Harmon-

Jones, (1997) stated, “the manipulation or the salience in a particular aspect influenced

their self-esteem, and their self-esteem influenced their subsequent prejudicial

responses to others” is irrelevant with “self and identity are forces of action” because

self-esteem is not an action rather an attitude/manner. Although it was also stated that

self has to do with their response, it would not be in relation through “self and

identity are forces of action” since it only affects the behavior of an individual itself.

Second unclear object to me was when, according to the book, Bless and Schwartz

(2010) showed the inclusion-exclusion model makes predictions for when each process is

likely to occur, this was unclear for me because it did not explain/ I did not understand what

those processes was.

Third unclear object for me was when the book states that, “Cultural psychologists have

focused attention on between-society differences in the likelihood of focusing on the "me"

versus the "us" aspects of the self (Markus & Oyserman, 1989; Oyserman, 1993; Triandis, 1

989). For example, Americans are described as more likely than East Asians to take a "me

“perspective (Markus & Kitayama, 1991). While it was also suggested that, “more situated

approaches demonstrate empirically that small shifts in contexts influence whether anyone,

American or East Asian, takes on "me" or "us" perspectives.”, I am confused on the thought

itself.

3. What three (3) questions that you want to ask about the reading?

- Does the “self” have deeper meaning rather than describing yourself?

- Does understanding the self-affect one’s identity

- Does understanding the identity affect the nature of the self?
