 Covers lecture and reading material

write code in R
o There may be conceptual questions involving Tableau and R (e.g., How to
interpret this visualization? How many times do you install a package?)

1. You have a numerical variable that has the following shape, center, and spread:
unimodal, skewed left, median of 10, and a range from 0 to 18. Draw an approximation
of a histogram (can be a curved line instead of bars) that satisfies these conditions. Label
the axes appropriately. (See: Types of Visuals)

2. For each of the following variables, label them using the N-O-I-R (nominal, original,
cardinal, ratio – see: Big Data II) descriptives. If it is a numerical value, indicate if it is
continuous or discrete.
a. A survey measure from 1 to 5
b. The price of a stock
c. The number of products sold
d. Percentile on the GMAT
e. A medical diagnosis

3. Suppose you would like to predict your income after graduation based on your GPA,

b. What are your independent variables?
c. What type of analysis task are you performing?
d. Is the method supervised or unsupervised?

4. The following questions refer to the following visual (note that diet = % with food
insecurity, exercise = % inactive, and smoking = % of smokers): (See: Tableau I
a. What type(s) of data is used to make the map plot?
b. What does color represent in these plots?
c. What region has the highest rate of obesity?

5. Describe one way in which you might delineate two groups in your dataset. What
principle of visualization are you using?

6. Describe one way in which a visualization could be misleading/misrepresent data.

(See: Storytelling ?)

7. Give an example where each of the following visualizations would be most appropriate:
(See: Types of Visuals)
