1. A student is investigating the oscillation of a metre rule that has one end resting
on the laboratory bench. The other end is held above the level of the bench by a
spring attached at the 90.0 cm mark. The arrangement is shown in Fig.

The period of oscillation is changed by moving a 200 g mass to different positions

along the rule. The student records the time t taken for 10 oscillations of the end
of the rule for each position of the mass. He measures the distance d from the
end of the rule to the mark under the centre of the mass. The readings are shown
in the table.

(a) Calculate the period T for each set of readings and enter the values in the table. [2]

(b) Plot a graph of d / cm (x-axis) against T / s (y-axis). The scale on the x-axis has
been started for you. Use your own graph paper. [5]
-3-
(c) Using the graph, determine the period T when the distance d is 55.0 cm.

T = ____________________ [2]
(d) The student suggests that T should be proportional to d. State with a reason
whether your results support this suggestion.

2. An IGCSE class watched a demonstration experiment to show that a metal rod

expands when heated. The apparatus is shown in Fig.

When the rod expands, it rolls the pin which moves the pointer. So a very small
expansion moves the pointer far enough to be seen clearly.
(a) One student wanted to find out how much longer the rod became when heated
above room temperature with a Bunsen burner. The rod was 0.750 m long at
room temperature.
To find the circumference of the pin, the student wrapped a piece of string 10
times round the pin, marked the string at the beginning and end of the 10 turns,
and then measured the length of the string between the marks. Fig. 4.2 shows
the string actual size.

(i) the student uses the metre rule to measure the distance x between the marks
on the string on Fig. Write down the distance x the student measured.

X = __________________

(ii) Calculate the circumference c of the pin.

C = ______________________ [3]
-4-
(b) A second student measured the diameter d of the pin using a micrometer screw
gauge. The diameter was 1.20 mm. When the rod was heated, the pointer moved
through 90°.

(i) Calculate the circumference c using the equation

c = ________________ [2]
(ii) Use this value of the circumference to calculate the increase e in the length of
the rod when heated

e = ___________________ [1]
(iii) Calculate the length l of the heated rod.

L = _______________ [1]
I The micrometer screw gauge is a very accurate instrument. Suggest why the
string and rule method of finding the circumference, used by the first student,
was inaccurate.

3. An IGCSE student carries out a lens experiment to investigate the magnification

of an image. The apparatus is shown in Fig.

The object is a rectangular hole in a piece of card. There is a thin wire across the
hole. Fig. shows the rectangular hole and the wire.

The student sets the distance u at 32.0 cm and moves the screen to obtain a
sharply focused image. The image distance v is 58.9 cm.
-5-

(a) (i) Calculate the magnification m using the equation m = v /u.

m = __________________ [2]
(ii) Draw a diagram of the image, actual size, for a magnification m = 2.0.

[3]
(b) The object distance u is the distance from the object to the centre of the lens.
Explain briefly how you would position a metre rule to obtain an accurate value
for u. You may draw a diagram.

_________________________________________________________________ [1]
(c) Suggest two precautions that you would take in this experiment in order to obtain
reliable readings.

I.________________________________________________________________

II._______________________________________________________________ [2]

4. The effect of surface colour on the cooling of an object is investigated.

Fig. shows two sets of apparatus used in this investigation

Test-tube A has a dull black outer surface and test-tube B has a shiny silver outer
surface. The test-tubes containing hot water are allowed to cool.
Readings are taken for 20 minutes to allow cooling curves to be plotted.
-6-
(a) State two factors that must be the same for the two sets of apparatus so that the
cooling curves may be compared.

I.________________________________________________________________

II._______________________________________________________________ [2]

(b) On Fig. 4.2, write the headings in the table that is to be used to record the results
for test-tube A.

[2]

(c) On Fig. 4.3, sketch and label the shape of the cooling curves for test-tube A and
for test-tube B.

[TOTAL :6]

5. A student is investigating the relationship between the power produced by an

electrical heater and the time taken to heat a beaker of water. The power of the
heater is given by the equation P = VI, where V is the potential difference (p.d.)
across the heater and I is the current in the heater.
Plan an experiment to investigate the relationship between the power produced
by an electrical heater and the time taken to heat a beaker of water.
The following apparatus is available:
ammeter
voltmeter
0–12 V variable power supply
250 cm3 beaker
heater
thermometer
stopwatch

The student can also use other apparatus and materials that are usually available
in a school laboratory.
You should:
• complete the diagram in Fig. to show the circuit that you would use
• explain briefly how you would carry out the investigation
• state the key variables that you would control
• draw a table with column headings, to show how you would display your
readings (you are not required to enter any readings in the table)
• explain how you would use your results to reach a conclusion.
