Introduction

ICT (Information and communications technology- or technologies) is

a broad term that includes any simple or sophisticated
communication device or application like radio, television, cellular
phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite
systems, and so on used in producing distribution, processing and
transforming information. The IT sector is an emerging area in Nepal.
The government of Nepal has identified IT and business process
outsourcing (BPO) as one of the 5 priority potential export service
sectors in the Nepal trade integration strategy (NTIS) 2010. IT has the
potential to generate high growth, investment, and significant profits
in the coming years and is expected to be one of the significant
growths' contributors to the Nepali economy. An IT park is being
established in Banepa in kavre district. The total investment in this
venture is estimated to be around NPR 270 million ($2.70million).
The government is preparing to give a 50% tax subsidy to companies
operating in the park. The park is expected to develop software,
promote IT-based business and provide services, as well as promote
investors in related fields.

Conclusion
Nepal is lagging behind than other developed countries in terms of
ICT infrastructure. Although Nepal has cheap prices for internet and
telecommunication accessibility mainly for internet and other ICT
resources is very poor. Nepal should focus on developing technology
driven GDP. More ICT driven productions and manufacturing means
more opportunities for ICT development among citizens and the
same thing is applicable vice versa. Government has to play an
initiative role in ICT development. The development of ICT has led to
growth of many other economies and Nepal also shows the
potential of economic growth as an outcome of ICT development.
The government’s sluggish pace in development of ICT also have
been a discouragement for the private sector to make investments
to this sector.

Recommendations
Nepal needs to make bigger budget allocations for the ICT
development in the country. Also, some part of this budget should
be allocated for the research & development in the sector of ICT as
done by many developed countries. This will help develop local
technologies and promote the quality of human resource. Nepal
direly needs some consolidated e-payment gateway system to help
promote e-business and e-commerce activities. ICT should be made
accessible to the rural population with further enhancements and
better managements of the projects like the rural telecentre's
projects. Private sector would also play a bigger role in development
of the ICT sector. The government should promote local companies
as well as try to create more job opportunities in the ICT sector.
Promoting ICT based companies will help the government to attract
foreign investments to the country. The quality of education should
also be raised helping the graduates to compete in int. Arena as well
as vision for new technologies. ICT should be kept as high priority by
the government and it should be converged with the sectors which
are playing a bigger role in the economy.
