INTRODUCTION
‘Principle and Practice of Management’. A subject that teach us about planning,
organizing and how to control an organization. All the topics that we will be learn are useful
for us as a student in future while working with a company. Henry Mintzberg claims that
"Management is, above all, a practice where art, science, and craft meet". The purpose of
writing this reflection essay is to explain my personal thought of this subject, the impact of
this subject towards me
There are a few lessons that I've learned to highlight. First of all, in Chapter 1,
Introduction to management , I have discovered that all organizations need to be handled.
The goal of all organizations is to fulfill their purpose. Management is needed, first and
foremost, by the mission and objectives of the organization. The purpose and goals shall be
defined by the use of ideas, definitions, principles and methods that are part of the planning
process. Then "everything else" must be coordinated with the mission and the objectives so
that they can be achieved. This includes organizing, leading and controlling. Anyone who
wants to be, is, or will be manager would benefit from learning about management.
Successful organizations will be led by those who implement management principles well.
I conclude this chapter on the leadership list of guiding principles to begin and learn
towards leadership effectiveness. The topics in this book and course, plus all the other
topics and courses in my career in education, can help me build the skills that will help me
understand and develop my style of leadership. Supplemented by experience and mistakes
5
that I must truly learn from mistakes and not just repeat again, I can build a foundation that
is necessary to lead a healthy organizational community. Following these principles will help
me develop effective leadership skills, such as knowing myself, being a role model, learning
to connect with my ears open and my mouth shut, knowing my team and being a team
player, being truthful with myself and others, not avoiding risks, trusting in myself, taking
the offensive rather than the defense, knowing the means of conflict and the means of
compromise, and know the ways of disagreement and the means of compromise, and the
last one is a good follower. Chapter 6 discussed several aspects of leadership effectiveness
in the complex world in which I am or will soon be employed. As I noted earlier, a
considerable amount of leadership research has been done, and a number of books and
articles have been published on the subject. Although leadership means different things to
different people, it is critical to understand that leadership is not equal to rank or small, or
that leaders are born.
The best part of the subject is that I've learned something that's going to be used
one day, and at the same time, I'm having fun with this subject. Actually, this subject is not
hard to understand, I can easily catch up with the help of my tutor and friends. This subject
is also not like the other assessment that we need to be a hundred percent serious about
the assessment or assignment that can lead to stress. Madam gives the student enough
time to practice new skills and gradually introduce learning. So that I can practice good time
management in the preparation of assigned tasks that can reduce my stress a little and
forget all the problems just a little bit. And I enjoy this subject because I have to answer
questions from my lecture quiz every week. So, this quiz helped me gain some knowledge
and have fun with this subject at the same time.
Other than that, the best thing about this subject is online learning, which allows
learners to build experience and knowledge by asking questions, analyzing content, sharing
opinions, showing agreement and disagreeing with another point of view. For example, we
have a group called "WhatsApp" so if anything we don't know we can ask directly through a
group called "WhatsApp" and some of the members will share information with other
members that doesn't alert during the class. I am very thankful to my lecturer and friends
because from the group “WhatsApp”, the chemistry from the other members are more
6
tightly than ever before. Before that, I barely know my classmates, but from the
"WhatsApp" group, I've been closer to them and I know they 're not my expectations. This
makes us more friendly and closer to each other because of good communication and
teamwork. If some of the members have a problem, we 're going to try to solve it together
and manage how to deal with it together. We 're not going to let one of our members have
the burden on their own. We 're going to try and help as long as we can. The lecturer will
then provide notes by sharing them with slides and voice notes. Through voice notes, my
lecturer was able to explain the subject in more depth so that we could easily understand it.
Such online courses promote not only courses, but also a space for forming social
relationships between lecturers and students. In fact, bonding with lecturers and students is
very important to me. The best part of this subject, I dare to ask my lecturer personally or
openly what I do not understand. Although at the same time, my tutor is a strict person, a
caring person. She always asks us about our condition so that we are not depressed and
always in good health. With communication, we can strengthen relationships and even
understand the subject easily.
Next point, I will expand on the benefits that I can apply from learning this subject.
This subject helped me to know myself. I understand my strengths and weaknesses not only
as an employee myself, but also as a boss, if I were ever to become one. Knowing my skills
would make it possible for me to strengthen my weakness and rely on my strengths. There
were a lot of things that I was shocked to see when I completed the evaluation, which also
linked my management skills. The different assignments and exercises in this class really
helped me understand and know where I am, what I excel in, and what I need to do. I've
discovered that I'm a very knowledgeable social manager and employee, I connect, adapt,
and develop relationships with people fairly easily, and I'm able to do a job effectively and
efficiently. On the other hand, some of my shortcomings include hiring or interviewing new
or future employees and being able to mentor others and myself at work. It was also
convenient for me to find my strengths. I'm a really fast learner and I'm easy to grasp a
definition. Many of the things I've been tested on and gone through in this class have been
very easy for me to understand.
Second, the benefit that I have learned from this subject are that I have discovered
that I am going to be a good follower as well as a good leader. Personally, I feel that being a
good follower means putting all my efforts forward. In that role, it was important for me to
be patient, to understand and to be confident in ensuring that the work I did was consistent,
but more importantly, It was important for me to have good communication skills. There are
many situations in life where we ourselves have to be good followers. To be a good follower
in this organization, it was important that my qualities and characteristics were true to who I
am, which included trust in credibility, but more than anything, it was my great
communication skills that made me a good follower in my opinion. Most problems that
leaders are asked to address are "people" problems created because of failure in
7
communication. Communication failures are the result of people 's hearing but not listening
to and knowing one another.
Finally, self-confidence is the benefit I have learned from this subject. I started to do
new things, such as looking for opportunities that I thought were out of my league and
putting myself forward, challenging my self-perception and making the voice of self-
confidence louder in my mind than any criticism or doubt. But a strange thing began to
happen as I started to build trust and self-esteem that I was smart, intelligent, and efficient.
In my opinion, self-confidence is about knowing that you are worthy to be happy, kind and
respectful to yourself, every single day. It's also about believing that you can be, do, and
have whatever you set out to do. Self-belief must also be nurtured as it is only you who can
take the necessary steps to enjoy a career, a dream business, an intimate relationship, a
family, a financial freedom or a life that you want. Trust yourself, have faith, and lead the
way, your way.
The suggestion that I am about to make is that the lecturer and the university, in
order to enhance this subject, demonstrate real-world connections and engage students in
activities that encourage innovative applications, are strategies rooted in both constructivist
theory and motivational design theories. Constructivist theory says that learners should
engage in authentic and localized activities within the learning community so that they can
make connections between existing knowledge and new content. Active learning strategies
lead students to make these connections and to develop a new scheme. The model for the
motivational design of instruction focuses on creating conditions that emphasize the
usefulness of instruction for current and future uses, linking content to prior experience,
needs, interests and motivations of students, and thus leading to an intrinsic motivation.
Combining theories and translating them into practical, relevant classroom experience
requires the use of a variety of educational alternatives. For example, use case studies,
simulations, or individual or group problem-solving exercises; include experiences with
experts; encourage students to apply new information to familiar scenarios and unfamiliar
situations; and suggest service-learning projects that demonstrate not just how the material
is relevant and useful, but also why. Case studies and simulations provide students with an
opportunity to be actively involved in solving real-world, open-ended problems that could
lead to comprehensive research, dialogue with and between peers and teachers, feedback
from career and life experiences, and critical thinking.
The last suggestion that I am about to make is approaches include the use of
emotional impact content, the introduction of contrasting facts and views, and the linking of
ideas across disciplines. For example, brain and learning studies have shown that emotion
and learning are closely related precisely because the brain function sequence first
processes new knowledge through centers that contain emotional reactions. The aim is to
attract the attention and devotion of students. Introducing concepts using suspense, humor,
presentations, ads, simulations or roleplaying would take advantage of the opportunity to
involve students quickly and to follow up with the inclusion of contrasting concepts would
8
help to interact with them at a deeper cognitive level. Demonstrating the ramifications and
implementation of concepts further underlines the fact that knowledge exists to be used in
a realistic and essential way. The participation of students in the types of activities
mentioned above helps to tackle the question of subject importance in classroom. When
students understand that they can use the knowledge and skills they have gained to better
themselves and the lives of those around them, they will feel encouraged and driven to
learn.
CONCLUSION
To conclude , I really enjoyed the subject. The whole topic is so comprehensive that
it gives me enough knowledge to use in the future. I liked that everything was easy, even
though we had to learn online because of the pandemic. But I would like to make some
suggestions for improving this subject to help students grow into committed, motivated and
self-regulating learners. I hope I can more understand so that I can apply what I have
learned in this subject in my daily life.
