4) London

I would like to tell you a few words about the capital city of the United Kingdom. London is the 9 th
largest city in the world. With a population of about 9 million, this is vast metropolis. London is
situated on the river Thames in south-east England.
I would like to mention a little from history.

The Romans came to London in 1st century. They built a small town on the Thames and called it
Londinium. After 1066 it became a capital of England. On the 2nd of September 1666 there was a
great fire, which destroyed almost all the city. It lasted 4 days and it started in the King´s bakers house.
There are four parts in London. The City of London, Westminster, West End and East End.

The City is the oldest part of London. It is a business, financial and economical centre. There are
many banks such as the Bank of England, government offices and also well known London Stock
Exchange.
Westminster is known as the centre of political and cultural life. There are many the most interest
places such as Westminster Abbey and House of Parliament.
The West End of London is the shopping and entertainment centre with many shops, theatres,
cinemas and clubs. This part was famous for that only rich people lived here.
The East End of London is poorer part than West End.

I would to focus on transport. London transport is one of high quality. For example, the world
famous red double-deckers buses. Traditional black taxi. To be faster, we can use the underground.
It is the oldest underground in the world. It is called the Tube. It was built in 1863. There are many
lines and many advertisments. The interest is that in the underground there are old stations and in
the overground there are new stations. Other undergrounds are in Glasgow and in New Castle. There
are also 5 airports in London (the most important is Heathrow).

I would like to mention the sights in London.

St. Paul´s Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. Princess Diana got married here.
The next interesting place is The Tower of London. It served as royal palace first, then prison and
fortress. It is a museum now. The Crown Jewels are kept here.
Tower Bridge is one of the most famous symbols of London.
I would like to mention Hyde park, which is the largest green park in London.
Other monument is Buckingham Palace. It is the official residence of the Queen.
Westminster Abbey. It is one of the oldest building in London.
The Houses of Parliament. This place is the home of the British Government.
There is also a famous clock-tower with Big Ben, now it is called Elizabeth Tower.
Other symbol of London is The London Eye, where visitors have view over London.
Oxford Street is Europe's busiest shopping street.
Downing Street 10, which is the official home of British Prime Ministers since 1731.
I would like to mention Piccadilly Circus. It is a modern square full of advertisements and Trafalgar
Square. Here is a Nelson’s statue. This place is very popular place for demonstrations and meetings.
There are 3 museums: The British Museum, Greenwich and Madame Tussaud´s museum. It is
the world famous wax museum of famous people.
With 40 theatres and music halls London is the centre of cultural life. The most important are: The
National Theatre, The Globe, The Royal Festival hall and The Royal Albert Hall.
