Universiti Teknologi Malaysia: K K K 0.3m 0.15m 0.15m K K K H 25 W/M

This document provides instructions for Assignment 1 of the Finite Element Method course. It includes 4 questions involving the use of the Rayleigh-Ritz and Galerkin's finite element methods to solve heat transfer problems. Students are asked to solve the problems in MS Word format and submit their solutions via email by the study week deadline to receive marks. The problems involve determining temperature distributions in composite walls and plates with different materials, boundary conditions and heat generation rates using the finite element approaches. Solutions require including the student's name, identification number, and writing out the full question before providing the response.

Assignment 1 [group] (10%), Sem2, 2015/16

Finite Element Method, MSCM 1333

Lecturer: Dr. Yeak Su Hoe, [email protected] , www.science.utm.my/yeaksuhoe/

All calculation in 3 D.P.

1. A composite wall consists of 3 materials. The outer temperature is T0=20 C. The left hand side was
insulated and h=25 C. Determine the temperature using Raleigh Ritz FEM.

k1 k2 k3
k1=20 W/m·ºC
0.3m 0.15m 0.15m k2=30 W/m·ºC
insulation 4 3 2 1 k3=50 W/m·ºC
T4 1 T3 2 T2 3 T1=20ºC h = 25 W/m2·ºC

2. Referring to the same problem in question 1, determine the temperature using FEM Galerkin’s
approach with weak form.

Heat is generated in a large plate (k=2 W/mC) at the rate of 1000 W/m3. The plate is 30cm thick. The
outside surfaces of the plate are exposed to ambient air at 30C with a convective heat-transfer coefficient of
d  dT 
20 W/m2C. The heat conduction equation is given k   Q  0. (note: please follow the below figure

for nodes and elements orientation).
1 10cm 2 10cm 3 10cm 4
h
50C T
T1 1 T2 2 T3 3 T4

3. Determine the above temperature distribution (T1,T2,T3,T4) in the wall using Raleigh Ritz FEM.

4. Determine the above temperature distribution (T1,T2,T3,T4) in the wall using Finite Element
Galerkin’s approach with weak form.
