Quarter I
I. Objectives
a. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American
literature as a means of connecting to the world through using ways of analyzing a one-
act play and providing feedback to a material listened to or viewed.

b. Performance Standard: The learner transfers learning by composing a play synopsis


and performing in a one-act play with appropriate and creative use of dramatic
conventions, multi-media resources, and verbal and non-verbal strategies.

c. Learning Competence Objectives: EN9G-IIId-21: Use infinitives correctly.

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

a. Explain the use of infinitives correctly.


b. Perform an act using infinitives.
c. Discuss the use of infinitives in a sentence.

Lesson Proper
Proverbs
Proverbs are brief instructive expression that suggest a specific action, behavior or
judgment. Referred to by some scholar as “the wisdom of many and the wit of one” they
are commonly written in the form of short assertions or poetic two liners which have
rhyme.
In Filipino, proverbs are called salawikain or sawikain. They prescribe norms, impart a
lesson, or emphasize traditions and beliefs in a community. In the Anthology of Damiana
L. Eugenio, she classified proverbs into six categories:
1. Proverbs expressing a general attitude towards life and the laws that govern life.
2. Ethical proverbs recommending certain virtues and condemning certain vices.
3. Proverbs expressing a system of values
4. Proverbs expressing general truths and observations about life and human nature.
5. Humorous proverbs
6. Miscellaneous proverbs

Examples
Proverbs expressing a general attitude towards life and the laws that govern
life.
 There is no earthly joy that is not watered with tears.
 Joy is always guarded by sorrow.
 The good fortune which is intended for me will come even without I seeking
it.

Ethical proverbs recommending certain virtues and condemning certain


vices.
 No debt remains unpaid.
 Do not put off for tomorrow what you can do for today.
 Do not cut the tree to get the fruit.

Proverbs expressing a system of values


 A lazy young man is like foul – smelling meat.
 Every drop of perspiration of an industrious man will be rewarded
accordingly.
 It takes only a moment to squander what took a year to save.

Proverbs expressing general truths and observations about life and human
nature.
 A good thing is never too late.
 The quiet person is slow to anger but terrible when aroused.
 A good woman is worth more than rubies.

Humorous proverbs
 The love of an old man is like a snail that crawls.
 I was formerly a gentleman without a care at all, but when I got married, my
body shrank and became small.
 After shopping for a long time, he ended up with a poor purchase.

Miscellaneous proverbs
 The sleeping boatman does not know the streams he has passed.
 It is better to go home and weave a net than to stay on the shore and watch
the fish.
 Don’t be too slow if there’s only a little rice; don’t be too shy if there’s only
a little viand.

A. Activity:
Think - pair and share.
Pick a partner, list 10 synonyms and 10 antonyms and use it in a sentence.

B. Generalization:
What is the essence of synonyms and antonyms in English grammar?

F. Evaluation:
Supply the correct word that is needed in the sentences.

1. It was announced that doctor salaries would be increased ________ doctors ended their

2. Jiyong is an excellent teacher _______ he explains the subject matter very well and

A. Enrichment Activity
The teacher will group the students into 2. They will be given different issues and they
should make their own stand using transitional devices that is accurate in their sentences.
