P V P V: Gas Laws

This document discusses several gas laws: 1) Boyle's Law states that the volume of a gas varies inversely with pressure when temperature is kept constant. 2) Charles' Law states that the volume of a gas varies directly with temperature when pressure is kept constant. 3) Gay-Lussac's Law states that the pressure of a gas varies directly with temperature when volume is kept constant. 4) The Combined Gas Law expresses the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature of a gas when the amount of gas is fixed. Sample problems are provided to demonstrate how to use these gas laws to calculate changes in pressure, volume, and temperature of gases under different conditions.

TOPIC: GAS LAWS

 Boyle’s Law: (Pressure-Volume Relationship)

- “The volume of a fixed mass of gas varies inversely with the pressure at constant temp.”

P1V1 = P2V2
Sample Problems:
1. What will be the pressure of 1.0L gas @ 1.00 atm which is allowed to expand @ constant temperature to 5.0L?
2. A sample of oxygen gas collected in the laboratory occupies a volume of 150mL when its pressure is 720mmHg. What
volume will the gas occupy @ a pressure of 750mmHg if the temperature remains constant?
SOLUTION:
1. Given:
V1- 1.0 L V2- 5.0 L P2= P1V1
P1- 1.0 atm P2- ? V2
= (1.0 atm)(1.0L) = 0.20atm
5.0L
2. Given:
V1- 150mL V2- ? V2= P1V1
P1- 720mmHg P2- 750mmHg P2
= (720mmHg)(150mL) =
750mmHg 144.00mL

 Charle’s Law: (Temperature-Volume Relationship)

- “The volume of a fixed mass of gas varies directly with the K temperature @ constant Pressure”

V1 V2 =
T1 T2
Sample Problems:
1. A sample of a neon gas occupies a volume of 752mL @ 25◦C. What volume will the gas occupy @ 50◦C if the pressure
remains constant?
2. A 5.00L of gas is collected at 100K and then allowed to expand to 20.0L. What must the new temperature be in order to
maintain the same pressure?
SOLUTION:
1. Given:
V1- 752mL V 2- ? V2= V1T2
T1- 25◦C+ 273=298K T2- 50◦C+ 273=323K T1

= (752mL)(323K) = 815.09mL
298K
2. Given:
V1- 5.00L V2- 20.0L T2= T1V2
T1- 100K T2- ? V1

T2= (100K)(20.0L) = 400.00K

5.00L

 Gay-Lussac’s Law: (Temperature-Pressure Relationship)

- “The pressure of a fixed mass of gas varies directly with the K temperature @ constant volume”

V1 V=
2
T1 T2

Sample Problem:
1. Before a trip from New York to Boston, the pressure in an automobile tire is 1.8 atm @ 20◦C. At the end of the trip, the
pressure gauge reads 1.9 atm. What is the new Celsius temperature of the air inside the tire?

SOLUTION:
1. Given:
P1- 1.8 atm P2- 1.9 atm T2= T1P2
T1- 20◦C + 273= 293K T2- ? P1

= (293K)(1.9atm) = (309-273) = 36.00◦C

1.8 atm

THE COMBINED GAS LAW

- “Expresses the relationship between pressure, volume, temperature of a gas when the amount of gas is fixed.”
P1V1
= P2V2
T1 T2

Sample Problems:
1. A helium filled balloon has a volume of 50.0L @ 25◦C and 820mmHg. What volume will it occupy @ 650mmHg and 10◦C?
2. 500mL of a gas was collected at 20◦C and 720mmHg. What is its volume at STP?

SOLUTIONS:
1. Given:
V1- 50.0L V 2- ?
T1- 25◦C + 273= 298K T2- 10◦C + 273= 283K
P1- 820mmHg P2- 650mmHg

V2= P1V1T2
P2T1
V2= (820mmHg)(50.0L)(283K) V 2=
(650mmHg)(298K) 59.90L
2. Given:
V1- 500mL V2- ?
T1- 20◦C + 273= 293K T2- 0◦C + 273= 273K
P1- 720mmHg P2- 760mmHg

V2= P1V1T2
P2T1

V2= (720mmHg)(500mL)(273K) V 2= 441.35mL

(760mmHg)(293K)

=========================================================================================

NOTE:
 Standard pressure = 1 atm
1 atm = 760 mmHg (millimeter of mercury)
= 760 torr (Torricelli)
= 1.01325x105 Pa (Pascal)
= 101.325 kPa (Kilo Pascal)

 Standard temp. = (0◦C) 273 K
