difference it can make.
So why is the USRSA Racquet
Customizer tool so important to your
business? It takes all the guesswork
and most of the trial and error out of
matching racquets. If you are working
with a client to find their optimum
specs, it is still very useful, but it re-
ally shines when simply matching to
known specs.

Investing in tools such as the USRSA Racquet Customizer can
pay big dividends and broaden the appeal of your business from simply stringing

surface damage more likely and more
severe, especially in areas of freeze-
thaw activity. Poor surface drainage also
may cause dirt or silt to accumulate on
the surface or cause damage to color-
coating systems.
In general, there are three levels of
repair for asphalt and concrete courts:

1. Repair and Recoating—A court with

a proper slope, planarity and drainage,
showing some wear, stains, low or high
areas, or cracking can be restored with
repair and recoating. This involves
washing the surface; coatings that may
be delaminating or bubbling will need
to be removed down to the base. Cracks

be leveled. Then an acrylic resurfacer
should be applied in the repaired areas.

Natural Lighting and Ventilation

Many fabric structures allow ample
natural light to filter into the facility,
which is beneficial for both the facil-

eliminates the need for artificial light-

2. What can the teaching pro do to

lessen the effects of long hours on
the court?
“The most important concept for a pro
to understand is that teaching tennis
is their ‘job’—it’s not really ‘exercise’ in
the sense of keeping their body healthy.
Understanding this makes caring for
themselves when they’re on and off the
court a necessity,” Dr. Overland notes.
Here are some specific suggestions
that Dr. Overland offered that have
helped me tremendously:

• Avoid teaching long blocks of hours

without a break. Years ago, I would
regularly teach 10 to 12 hours without
a break, grabbing a quick sandwich in
between lessons. Now, after four or five
hours in a row, my back and legs begin
to tighten, and my arm begins to bark.
As a result, I try not to schedule more
than four hours in a row. After a short
break (30 to 60 minutes), my body
relaxes and I’m good to go.

• Try not to stand in one place for too

long without shifting your weight. We
all have our “teaching stance.” Mine has
the ball cart by my left hip (I’m right-
handed) and my weight resting on my

tennis balls had always been a commodity
product, often sold as a loss leader at retail
and never above $1.99. For decades, there
was no price elasticity, especially with
the mass merchants. So, the concept of
developing a higher-end tennis ball seemed
foolhardy. And, in the eyes of our salesforce
when we introduced the product during a

we were nuts!
With the R&D team and our

I have always had the “red W” stamped
