1.0 Priority of the User's Manual

This user's manual represents a standard publication, describing the maxi-

mum configuration of an Engine Order Telegraph System delivered by the
company of Stein Sohn GmbH.

Project-specific configurations, like e.g. the number of connected repeaters

or telegraphs are not dealt with; they are, however, part of the project-spe-
cific "as-built" -documentation supplied by Stein Sohn together with the re-
lated system.

2.0 Purpose of Application

The present user's manual is intended to help the operating personnel on-
board a vessel to understand the functional principle of Stein Sohn's Engine
Order Telegraph System and to operate it accordingly.

Part 1: Function and Operation Function

Part 1: Function and Operation

1.0 Function

The Stein Sohn Engine Telegraph System represents the communication me-
dium between the bridge, the engine and the emergency console.

The main telegraph is installed on the bridge. Further control levers can be Properties
installed on the bridge wings, connected to the bridge telegraph telemetri-
cally by means of a "Electrical Shaft" and can thus also function as Master
units, i.e. are in a position to take over command . Integrated LEOs cause the
related pushbutton to light up if activated .

The counterpart to the bridge telegraph is the Engine Control Room (ECR)
telegraph. An acknowledgeable repeater is installed at the emergency con-
sole for continuously indicating the position of the bridge telegraph. If re-
quired, it can work in conjunction with the bridge telegraph as an Engine
telegraph .

Further moving coil repeaters can be installed at various positions through-

out the ship.

The bridge and engine control room telegraphs can be used in 2 different
modes of operation :

as remote engine control levers

as engine telegraphs

The telegraph system is of modular construction, whereby the individual Bus system
components are inter-connected by means of a bus system .

2.0 Operating Modes

The Engine Telegraph system can be operated in 2 different modes:

as a speed control lever; i.e. as a remote engine control le-

ver
as an Engine Telegraph

Operating Modes Part 1: Function and Operation

2.1 Operation as a Remote Engine Control Lever

In this mode, the bridge telegraph supplies a speed setpoint, via an integrat-
ed potentiometer, to the main engine's remote control system. The bridge
telegraph can in turn be remotely controlled by the wing control levers.

Electrical Shaft The wing control levers are telemetrically connected to the bridge telegraph
by an "Electrical Shaft" . In this manner, the lever positions of the bridge
telegraph and wing control levers are always synchronous. The "Electrical
Shaft" is an independent subsystem which can be switched OFF when not
required .

In the remote engine control/ever mode, the telegraphs in the Engine and
engine control room operate merely as repeaters .

Short ringing im- A short ringing impulse in the remote-control mode provides for signalling
pulse
at the ECR and the ERin case the bridge lever position was changed- pro-
vided, that the short ringing impulse is activated.

2.1.1 Switching the Electrical Shaft ON/OFF

The "Electrical Svstem" is switched ON/OFF by pressing the illuminated
pushbutton WING
CONTROL
on the bridge telegraph.
ON /OFF

2.1.2 Transferring Control

The following describes how control is transferred from a wing control lever
to the bridge telegraph and vice-versa; i.e. from the bridge telegraph to one
of the two wing control levers. If the system is switched on, the bridge tele-
graph automatically becomes the master of the system .

2.1.2.1 Transferring Control to the Wing Control Lever

The procedure to be followed to transfer control to one of the two wing
control levers depends upon the type of control lever (fitted with or without
motor).

In general, a telegraph system is made up of the following individual com-

ponents:

• mtBUS Controller
• Bridge telegraph
• Wing control levers (Port and Starboard)
• Telegraph in the Engine Control Room (ECR)
• acknowledgeable repeater at the emergency control stand

Design Part 1: Function and Operation

3.1 mtBUS Controller

The mtBUS Controller supervises the flow of data traffic on the mtBUS. It
receives status messages from the various control levers connected and
places them at the disposal of the central monitoring system. The following
contacts are supplied:

Wrong-way contact, which activates an alarm if the di-

rection of motion demanded by the bridge telegraph is in
opposition to the direction of rotati on of the propeller
shaft at that point in time .

Call-up contact, which activates acoustic and visual

alarms if the bridge telegraph and ECR or ER telegraphs
are out of synchronization.

Failure contact, activated in case there is a problem with

the Engine telegraph system.

Input, to set the Engine tel egraph system to the remote

control mode

Input, to select the communication partner for the

bridge telegraph when operating in the Engine t elegraph
mode

The mtBUS controller ensures that a system error causes the push buttons on
the wing levers to start blinking and the scales to be illuminated.

3.4 Wing Control Levers

The wing control levers serve to remotely control the bridge telegraph.

Electrical Shaft The position of the bridge telegraph and wing control levers are synchro-
nized by means of the "Electrical Shaft"; i.e. the bridge telegraph and wing
control levers always indicate the same position. This is only valid for wing
control levers fitted with a motor.

The wing control lever is used to assume remote control of the bridge tele-
graph from either the port or starboard wing .

Fig . 1-6 Front View of a Wing Control Lever

As shown in the Figure above, the front plate of a wing control lever is fitted
with the following indicators and operating elements:

• two arrowed push buttons to synchronize with the current bridge

telegraph lever position (only for levers without a motor)
• an illumin ated green indicator " Electrical Shaft ON/OFF"
• a rotaty dimmer control knob
• an illuminated white "Take Control I On Service" pushbutton

3.4.4 Rotary Dimmer Control Knob

The desired level of illumination of the position indicator and pushbuttons
can be achieved by turning the rotary dimmer control knob.

The repeater indicates the current position of the Master telegraph. It is also
provided with an acknowledge function. In this section it will be referred to
simply as the repeater.

If the repeater is operating in the Engine telegraph mode, to communicate

with the Master telegraph (either the bridge telegraph or one of the wing
control levers), the commands given by the Master telegraph can be ac-
knowledged by pressing the appropriate pushbutton.

If the repeater is in the Engine telegraph mode and selected as the bridge
telegraph's communication partner, bridge telegraph commands can be ac-
knowledged by pressing the appropriate button .

The repeater provides a contact for an acoustic alarm (bell or electronic

sound generator), which will be activated if Master and Slave lever positions
are out of synchronization when operating as Engine telegraphs .

mtBus Part 1: Function and Operation

This pushbutton is the counterpart to the above pushbutton. If pressed, the

command for "Finish with Engine" is acknowledged; i.e . no more orders are
to be expected and all systems can be shut down.

In the engine telegraph mode, this illuminated pushbutton indicates that

the acknowledgeable repeater has been selected to function as the commu-
nication partner of the bridge telegraph.

If the system configuration consists of 2 ER telegraphs, this component is

designed as an illuminated pushbutton for realizing the master switchover.

Pressing this pushbutton causing the brightness of the illuminated indicators

to be increased or decreased. In the emergency telegraph operation where
emergency telegraphs are installed on the bridge, in the ECR and/or the ER,
only the brightness of the bridge- and the wing telegraphs can be set.

r==l~ The activation of these two pushbuttons (in the order as illustrated to the
c::J~ left while keeping both of them pressed) initiates a lamp test, causing all
LEOs to light up one after the other.

3.5.1 Acknowledging
It is only possible to acknowledge commands at the repeater if the system
is being operated in the Engine telegraph mode and if the repeater was se-
lected to function as the communication partner.

2.5 Error Elimination

In the following paragraphs the procedures for performing the actions de-
scribed in chapter 3.3 are described.

2.5.1 Alignment ....... ERRORS

In case the error message PARAMETER LOST occurs, an alignment
must be performed. Depending on which unit is erroneous, lever potenti-
ometer, pointer and/or power output for the repeater(s) must be aligned.

2.5.1.1 Aligning the Telegraph's Potentiometer

The control lever potentiometer serves to register the position of the ope-
rating lever on telegraphs and must always be aligned when operating a
telegraph for the first time. The voltage values corresponding to the various
lever positions are stored and used for reference during operation. The LEOs
located above the service switches indicate the respective action. The type
of lever configuration determines, which LED lights up.

Part 3: Troubleshooting and Repair Repair

3.0 Repair

3.1 General

The Stein Sohn repair philosophy states that the smallest replaceable items,
to be replaced should a fault in the system occur, must be defined. The rou-
tines described in Chapter 3 serve to localize a fault which has occured.

In case a new spare part is needed, you are kindly asked to indicate both,
the type no. marked on the respective component (e.g. bridge control lever)
and the article no. for the respective spare.

The following Sections contain descriptions of how to replace these smallest

replaceable items .

3.2 Replacing the mtBUS Controller

If a fault occurs in the controller, it must be replaced as a complete unit, fol-
lowing the instructions below:

Table 3-6 Replacing the mtBUS Controller

Step Action Remarks

1 Disconnect all external connections.

2 Remove the defective PCB (Pri nted

Circuit Board).

3 Make a note of the OIL switches' These switches serve for setting the
settings. addresses of the components and
for suppressing the short ringing
impulse.

4 Fit the replacement PCB.

5 Set the OIL switches on the replace-

ment PCB to the same as those
noted in step 3 above.

6 Re-connect the external connec-

tions i.a.w . (in accordance with) the
following description .

Repair Part 3: Troubleshooting and Repair

Connect the cable screen and/or ship's ground to terminal 3 .

The failure contact is connected to terminals 4 and 5. This opens when a

fault in the system occurs or when the supply voltage fa ils, thus indicating
an alarm situation to a higher order alarm system.

Th is 5-pole terminal block is used to connect the mtBUS controller to the mt-
BUS. The centre term inal (13) must be connected to the Bus cable's screen .

The call-up contact is connected to terminals 21 and 22 . This serves to ac-

tivate acoustic and visual alarms when operating in the Engine Telegraph
mode . The alarm indicates that the lever positions of the bridge telegraph
and the telegraph in the ER or ECR are out of synchronization .

Terminals 23, 24 and 25 represent the wrong-way contacts, which acti-

vate an alarm if the direction of motion demanded by the bridge telegraph
is in opposition to the direction of rotation of the propeller shaft at that
point in time.

Terminals 27 and 28 are used, in the Eng ine Telegraph mode to select the
location of the bridge telegraph's counterpart (ER or ECR) .

The following PCB components can be referred to, in order to test that the
mtBUS Controller PCB is correctly installed and connected:

3.2.2.1 LC Display Messages
