1.0 Function
The Stein Sohn Engine Telegraph System represents the communication me-
dium between the bridge, the engine and the emergency console.
The main telegraph is installed on the bridge. Further control levers can be Properties
installed on the bridge wings, connected to the bridge telegraph telemetri-
cally by means of a "Electrical Shaft" and can thus also function as Master
units, i.e. are in a position to take over command . Integrated LEOs cause the
related pushbutton to light up if activated .
The counterpart to the bridge telegraph is the Engine Control Room (ECR)
telegraph. An acknowledgeable repeater is installed at the emergency con-
sole for continuously indicating the position of the bridge telegraph. If re-
quired, it can work in conjunction with the bridge telegraph as an Engine
telegraph .
The bridge and engine control room telegraphs can be used in 2 different
modes of operation :
The telegraph system is of modular construction, whereby the individual Bus system
components are inter-connected by means of a bus system .
Electrical Shaft The wing control levers are telemetrically connected to the bridge telegraph
by an "Electrical Shaft" . In this manner, the lever positions of the bridge
telegraph and wing control levers are always synchronous. The "Electrical
Shaft" is an independent subsystem which can be switched OFF when not
required .
In the remote engine control/ever mode, the telegraphs in the Engine and
engine control room operate merely as repeaters .

The mtBUS Controller supervises the flow of data traffic on the mtBUS. It
receives status messages from the various control levers connected and
places them at the disposal of the central monitoring system. The following
contacts are supplied:
The mtBUS controller ensures that a system error causes the push buttons on
the wing levers to start blinking and the scales to be illuminated.

Fig. 1-5
Electrical Shaft The position of the bridge telegraph and wing control levers are synchro-
nized by means of the "Electrical Shaft"; i.e. the bridge telegraph and wing
control levers always indicate the same position. This is only valid for wing
control levers fitted with a motor.
The wing control lever is used to assume remote control of the bridge tele-
graph from either the port or starboard wing .
As shown in the Figure above, the front plate of a wing control lever is fitted
with the following indicators and operating elements:
When lit, this arrow indicates that the lever must be pulled back to achieve
synchronization with the bridge telegraph.
The repeater indicates the current position of the Master telegraph. It is also
provided with an acknowledge function. In this section it will be referred to
simply as the repeater.
If the repeater is in the Engine telegraph mode and selected as the bridge
telegraph's communication partner, bridge telegraph commands can be ac-
knowledged by pressing the appropriate button .

In the remote control mode, the corresponding panel on the repeater will

In the Engine telegraph mode, a new command given by the Master tele-

new command is now acknowledged by pressing the appropriate pushbut-

the previous command will extinguish.

In the remote control mode, the repeater serves simply to repeat com-
mands given to the remote control. The indicator lamp corresponding to the r:=l
command will light continuously. ~
If the repeater is selected to the Engine telegraph mode, to communicate r:=l
with the Master telegraph, it will show the following behaviour pattern: ~
blinking light a new command has been given by the Mas- r:=l

acknowledged, the button will light continu-
ously.
By pressing this pushbutton, the command for setting the main engine in
the standby mode will be acknowledged.
Pressing this pushbutton will acknowledge the command for stopping the
main engine.
r==l~ The activation of these two pushbuttons (in the order as illustrated to the
c::J~ left while keeping both of them pressed) initiates a lamp test, causing all
LEOs to light up one after the other.
3.5.1 Acknowledging
It is only possible to acknowledge commands at the repeater if the system
is being operated in the Engine telegraph mode and if the repeater was se-
lected to function as the communication partner.
4.0 mtBus
The mtBUS requires a 4-wire cable, whereby two wires serve to transf er data
and two wires provide the power supply voltage for the Bus.
1.0 General
After delivery of the system each unit should be inspected for visible signs
of damage. The installation of each unit as well as the connections to be
performed are described in the following paragraphs.
It is permitted to use the same multi-core cable for the power supply as well
as for the mtBUS.
2.2 DIP-Switch 55
Via the SS DIP switch a system's configuration; i.e. the connected compo- ON
nents, are set. Each bus component is allocated a switch, which is set to ON ~~~~~~~~

in case the respective component does exist.
The possible settings together with their meaning are described in chapter
"3.1.3" on page 2-7.
2.3 Installation
The mtBUS controller has a width of approx. 200 mm and is mounted on a
DIN rail.

Stein Sohn's Engine Order Telegraph System does not require any mainte-
nance actions. In order to safeguard, that the LEDs of the display elements
function properly, a lamp test should be performed in regular intervals.
As long as the pushbutton is pressed, all display elements should be lit with
full brightness . This only applies to the bridge and wing control levers.

2.1 General
In case of an alarm the wing control levers and the engine telegraph on the
second bridge- if existing -start blinking. At the same time, a respective er-
ror message is displayed on the LC display of the mtBUS-Controller.
The troubleshooting procedures as described below shall help to locate an
error in case of the system's malfunction and to put the user in the position
to eliminate it if possible.

3.0 Repair
3.1 General
The Stein Sohn repair philosophy states that the smallest replaceable items,
to be replaced should a fault in the system occur, must be defined. The rou-
tines described in Chapter 3 serve to localize a fault which has occured.
In case a new spare part is needed, you are kindly asked to indicate both,
the type no. marked on the respective component (e.g. bridge control lever)
and the article no. for the respective spare.
3 Make a note of the OIL switches' These switches serve for setting the
settings. addresses of the components and
for suppressing the short ringing
impulse.
Th is 5-pole terminal block is used to connect the mtBUS controller to the mt-
BUS. The centre term inal (13) must be connected to the Bus cable's screen .
Terminals 27 and 28 are used, in the Eng ine Telegraph mode to select the
location of the bridge telegraph's counterpart (ER or ECR) .
no voltage: ER
24V: ECR
Term inals 29+30 serve to switch between the Eng ine Telegraph and Remote
Control modes.
This LED indicates the correct power supply during normal operation by ®
lighting GREEN; when a fault occurs, i.e. no voltage present, it will not be lit. BUS
POWER
This LED flickers YELLOW when data is transmitted to the Bus components Q9
by the mtBUS Controller. TXD
This LED indicates fault-free data traffic. If a fault occurs, it will not be lit. Q9
