NAME 219 (Marine Engines and Fuels) Assignment 01
Assignment 01
1. A 500 hp diesel engine has thermal efficiency of 40%. It is water cooled which takes 25%
of the total heat input. If the temperature rise of the water through cooling of the engine is
to be maximum 30°F, what should be the flow of water in gallon/hr.
2. Estimate the cfm of cooling air per hp if it takes 30% of the fuel energy. Given that, thermal
efficiency = 35%, Cp = 0.24 BTU/lb-°F, dT = 130°F, specific volume of air = 13.7 cft/lb.
3. A 6-cylinder 4-stroke CI engine develops 220 KW at 1500 rpm with brake specific fuel
consumption of 0.273 kg/ kWh.
Determine the size of the single hole injection nozzle if the injection pressure is 160 bar
and the pressure in the combustion chamber is 40 bar. The period of injection is 300 of
crank angle. Specific gravity of fuel is 0.85 and orifice discharge coefficient is 0.9.
Calculate the quantity of fuel to be injected per cycle per cylinder.
4. An automobile has a three-liter SI V6 engine that operates on a four-stroke cycle at 3500
RPM. The compression ratio is 9.5, the length of connecting rod is 16.5 cm and the engine
is square (B=S). At this speed, combustion ends at 200 at TDC.
Calculate:
a. Cylinder bore and stroke length
b. Average piston speed
c. Clearance volume of one cylinder
d. Piston speed at the end of combustion
e. Distance the piston has travelled from TDC at the end of combustion
f. Volume in the combustion chamber at the end of combustion.
