We’re The Times and The Sunday Times University of the Year for Teaching Quality 2020.
The Job
Working within the Department of Engineering and Mathematics you will form part of the Solid
Mechanics and Dynamics Subject Group, in order to further enhance its teaching and research.
The group currently consists of 10 academic staff, and supports the delivery of the department's
mechanical, aerospace and automotive engineering programmes at both the undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. The group has a strong passion for teaching and learning, and a successful
history working with industry. It also has research strengths particularly in finite element analysis,
vibro-acoustics and vehicle dynamics.
As a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering you will be expected to develop, manage and deliver
research and teaching to the highest standard, in order to further enhance the reputation of
engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. You will be required to contribute to the development of
learning materials, and the planning and implementation of emerging best practice whilst teaching

looking to enhance our current expertise in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and solid mechanics.
You will have an enthusiasm to teach and educate the next generation of engineers. As well as a
clear idea of your research vision, and how it will build upon our current departmental portfolio. You
will also be expected to secure external funding to support your research activities and to publish your
work in leading international journals.
The Department
The Department of Engineering and Mathematics is one of the UK’s leading providers of industrially
focused engineering, maths and physics education. We have a vibrant and comprehensive portfolio,
strong student recruitment and some of the best teaching, learning and research facilities - benefitting
from over £24m of infrastructure investment in the past three years.
The department is home to over 100 academic staff and 2,300 students across a range of
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Both staff and students are supported by a number of
engineering workshops and laboratories. We work in partnership with a number of leading
organisations including Rolls-Royce, British Steel, JCB and Network Rail. Our vibrant part time
provision represents our commitment to collaborative working with industry across a variety of sectors.
In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, 56% of our engineering research submission
was rated internationally excellent or world-leading. One of our key strategic aims is to build on this
research excellence towards an excellent REF 2021.
Your ability to inspire, motivate and connect with a wide range of people will mean you can engage
with both our students and our industry partners - to promote employability and learning in a real
world context.
We want to hear from you if you are positively engaged with your discipline and can generate that
