VP’s Greeting

Dear students,

Welcome to the 2018 Sungkyunkwan University’s (SKKU) International Summer Semester (ISS)!

In pursuit of becoming a world-renowned university, the Office of International Relations’ purpose

is to serve the international community at SKKU while proactively broadening its global alliances.
We remain committed to all of the students spending their summers here with us, and extend our
thanks and appreciation for the many ways in which you enrich SKKU’s academic community.

This year’s ISS is the most comprehensive and innovative program we have ever put together.
We have more courses in more subjects this year with an emphasis on meeting the current and
future demands of our students and global society. With this in mind, we intend to provide a
unique platform for sophisticated exploration of compelling issues influencing the problems and
opportunities that are prevalent in the world. We are driven to deliver the most interesting,
truly international, educational experience both inside and outside the classroom.

The primary objective of our summer program is to facilitate the creation of a new criterion by
which international dialogue is conducted by appealing to students that are interested in looking
beyond borders. This can ultimately be achieved through the methodology our professors utilize
to solve problems from an interdisciplinary perspective as well as by stimulating thought-
provoking analysis of key topics shaping social, economic, and personal development.

This being the eleventh year of SKKU’s ISS, I have no doubt that it will once again be a great
opportunity for students from around the world to engage in cross-cultural interactions, be
challenged by our diverse courses, and take part in the wonderful cultural activities we provide.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any inquires or requests. Thank you once again for
choosing to attend Sungkyunkwan University’s International Summer Semester and enjoy your
time here with us!

Ja Choon Koo, Ph.D.

ISS Assistants

ISS student assistants serve ISS students in the following ways.

■ Teaching Assistant (TA)

Teaching Assistants act as a bridge between lecturers and students. They facilitate classroom activity

to the class concerning a course or the overall ISS program from time to time. They are the first ones
you are advised to contact if you have any questions about a class.

■ Housing Assistant (HA)

Housing Assistants are dormitory helpers who stay in the dorm with you. ISS participants must contact
the HA of the dorm if they have any housing problems or difficulties. You are expected to follow the
HAs’ instructions and guidance, as they are the authorized staff of the dorm that are responsible for
supervising it with or without a security guard.

Taxis can be expensive if you are traveling a long distance. The basic fare is ₩3,000 for a regular taxi,

Electricity

The standard voltage in South Korea is 220V. There are two-pin plugs on most Korean electrical
equipment, the same type used in France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey, and many other countries.
Some 120V electrical appliances may not work properly even with an adapter, but any devices with an
AC adapter such as laptops or rechargeable batteries should function safely.
