ISS Handbook 2018 Rev9
ISS Handbook 2018 Rev9
Dear students,
Welcome to the 2018 Sungkyunkwan University’s (SKKU) International Summer Semester (ISS)!
This year’s ISS is the most comprehensive and innovative program we have ever put together.
We have more courses in more subjects this year with an emphasis on meeting the current and
future demands of our students and global society. With this in mind, we intend to provide a
unique platform for sophisticated exploration of compelling issues influencing the problems and
opportunities that are prevalent in the world. We are driven to deliver the most interesting,
truly international, educational experience both inside and outside the classroom.
The primary objective of our summer program is to facilitate the creation of a new criterion by
which international dialogue is conducted by appealing to students that are interested in looking
beyond borders. This can ultimately be achieved through the methodology our professors utilize
to solve problems from an interdisciplinary perspective as well as by stimulating thought-
provoking analysis of key topics shaping social, economic, and personal development.
This being the eleventh year of SKKU’s ISS, I have no doubt that it will once again be a great
opportunity for students from around the world to engage in cross-cultural interactions, be
challenged by our diverse courses, and take part in the wonderful cultural activities we provide.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any inquires or requests. Thank you once again for
choosing to attend Sungkyunkwan University’s International Summer Semester and enjoy your
time here with us!

Class Schedule
SKKU ISS grades consist of an academic component and class attendance. It is required that ISS students
meet both criteria to pass a course. SKKU ISS uses a Pass/Fail grading policy.
■ Academic Evaluation
◦ Pass (P): grade of 60% or above
◦ Fail (F): grade below 60%

you cannot attend the graduation ceremony.
Course Add/Drop
Adding or dropping courses is NOT allowed at any time during the ISS.
Every ISS course is a 3-credit course except the Korean Language Course. In order to obtain credit for a
full summer semester at SKKU, students must complete 45 hours of study in 3 weeks. Korean language
courses worth 2 academic credits require fulfillment of 2 study hours per day. You can see SKKU
Academic Transcript Guide in the following website.
https://summer.skku.edu/_res/summer/etc/guide.pdf
■ Credit Transfer
A student’s home university is primarily responsible for transferring SKKU credits. SKKU only provides
3
information on the ISS grading system, course syllabi, and academic policies. Therefore, all ISS
participants are advised to inquire at their home universities to ensure credits are transferred properly.
Course Readers
Course materials for ISS 2018 are available at the ISS Office upon professor request. The TA for each
course will provide correct information on where to acquire course readers and other class materials.
You may also download course materials from the ISS website
(https://skb.skku.edu/summer/board/academic.do ), in which case your class TA will give you another
notification about it.
The Extra Korean Language Class is held from 16:00 to 17:30 on Tuesdays and Thursday. Classrooms are

The UCC (user created content) Contest provides students with the opportunity to show off their
creativity and the ISS experience. To join, students need to create short videos (5-minute maximum)
about the ISS. The subject matter can be anything about the ISS, including the lead up to coming to
Korea, the extracurricular activities, spending time studying or meeting with friends; the point is to be
creative. Submit the videos via email to [email protected] by Sunday, July 15th. If the files are too big,
please upload them to Dropbox or Google Drive and email the link. The videos will be uploaded onto
the ISS website (https://summer.skku.edu/summer/index.do) and all ISS students will have the
opportunity to vote for the best ones on the site. The creators of the best three videos will be
awarded 500,000 KRW, 300,000 KRW, and 200,000 KRW for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize, respectively, in

■ Bus
There are two types of buses in Korea: the regular city bus and the deluxe bus. For your convenience,
it is possible to use a pre-paid transit card to pay the fare instead of paying by cash. Since bus lines can
be complicated, even for Seoul residents, we recommend you use the subway unless you are certain
about the bus number and the stop.
■ Taxi
Taxis can be expensive if you are traveling a long distance. The basic fare is ₩3,000 for a regular taxi,
and the black luxury taxis (called deluxe taxis) cost more with a basic fare starting at ₩5,000. A 20%
extra fare will be charged from midnight to 04:00 am. There is also a special orange cab for
international residents living in Korea in which users can use foreign languages.
Electricity
The standard voltage in South Korea is 220V. There are two-pin plugs on most Korean electrical
equipment, the same type used in France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey, and many other countries.
Some 120V electrical appliances may not work properly even with an adapter, but any devices with an
AC adapter such as laptops or rechargeable batteries should function safely.
