The document summarizes a study conducted by nine researchers on the barriers to online learning faced by medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers identified five categories of barriers: technological, individual, domestic, institutional, and community. Most students struggled with adapting learning styles, domestic responsibilities, and poor communication from educators. Lack of adequate internet access and devices also hindered some students' ability to complete tasks on time, as did lack of self-discipline, motivation and time to comprehend materials. The present study relates to this work by also examining factors that affect students' timely submission of tasks during remote learning.

Relevant Findings:
The nine researchers conducted a study about the barriers of online learning
medical students faces in the Philippines in the time of Covid-19. Some of their findings
were as follows:

1. The pandemic caused psychological stress among the students, making it

difficult for them to focus on studying. They expressed feelings of anxiety,
burnout, loneliness, homesickness, grief, and hopelessness. The students
worried about online assessments, future plans in medical school, possible
delays in training, and the safety of their families from COVID-19.
2. The barriers that affect the academic performance of these medical students
were classified under five categories: (1) Technological, which pertain to
hardware, software, and internet connectivity; (2) Individual, which include
students’ learning styles, physical, and mental health; (3) Domestic, which are
concerns at home or within the family, including financial distress; (4)
Institutional, which apply to administration, and educator skills; and (5)
community barriers, which include lockdown restrictions, infrastructure
challenges, and sociopolitical issues.

3. Most habitually encountered was difficulty adapting learning styles, having to

fulfill responsibilities at home, and poor communication between educators and
learners. Based on the responses they gathered, about two-thirds of the
respondents often encountered these barriers.

4. From the results of the investigation, some students failed to do their tasks
because of their poor internet providers. 79% of the medical students are
subscribed to postpaid internet services but there were three out of five
subscribed with a slow connection or almost unbearable and 19% are attending
class through prepaid mobile data.

5. One factor of the students’ failure to accomplish their tasks on time is the lack of
materials needed for the online class. In attending online classes, one device is
not enough. In the survey conducted, there were 216 students (6%) medical
students who own smartphones only.

6. Respondents said that they needed more time to comprehend learning materials.
Many admitted that they lacked self-discipline and motivation to study.

Relationship to the present study:

The study conducted by the nine authors is related to the present study since the nine
researchers and the new study focuses on what barriers students encounter from this
new set-up of learning that affects their academic performance. Also, this research
study and the present study are related as their center of attention is the unmet needs
of an online student that adds to the factors why they fail to submit their task on time.
Since all of the students were experiencing remote learning nowadays, we can
therefore see the causation that some students are experiencing some degree of
mental health difficulty which can affect the submission of their tasks on time.
