The Commonwealth

What is the Commonwealth

A voluntary association of independent states formed mostly by the United Kingdom and most of its
former colonies.

There are 53 nations, 2 billion citizens, who are a member of the Commonwealth.

Examples of countries:

 India
 Ireland
 Canada
 Australia
 …

Countries are linked to the British by the Commonwealth but have their own independent
government.

British Empire used to be a quarter of the world at its peak once.

Three things the Commonwealth stands for

1. Friendship
2. Education
3. Democracy

The programs the Commonwealth works on to help all its member citizens:

 Human Rights
 Support during election time
 Equality for women
 Eradicating poverty
 Educational development

Head of the Commonwealth = Queen Elizabeth

 Travels to member countries and attends the Commonwealth games.

 Holds discussions with the Commonwealth leaders, so that the Commonwealth maintains its
values.

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth

 Ensures that all member countries’ governments work together to meet the
Commonwealth’s main goals and programs.
 Patricia Scotland.

If a country goes against a program of the Commonwealth it can be suspended or even expelled.

 Fiji suspended in 2009  the military overthrew the government = against the
Commonwealth’s principles of democracy.
Commonwealth day
Held every year on the second Monday of March.

 The Queen broadcasts a message to all member countries

 All member flags fly from Marlborough House in London
(the home of the Commonwealth Secretariat).

Commonwealth Games
Athletes compete as individuals rather than as countries.

 The games are held every 4 years in a country that’s part of the Commonwealth.
 Next games will be held in Birmingham in 2022.

Protectorate
A protectorate country can receive protection from the British.

Protectorate ≠ colony

A colony is directly under the command of the Queen while a Protectorate country has their own
independent government.
