Statistical Analysis With Application Activity

The document discusses various data collection methods and statistical analysis concepts. It provides advantages and disadvantages of interview, questionnaire, and observation methods of data collection. It then provides examples of calculating mean, median, mode, and range from sample exam score data. Key measures of central tendency like mean, median, and mode are defined as being important for summarizing data. The document notes advantages and disadvantages of each measure.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WITH APPLICATION

Activity
A. List down at least two advantages and two disadvantages of the following Data Collection
Methods.
1. Interview Method (4 points)

 Advantages:
o The interviewer can capture raw emotions, tone, gestures, voices, and choices of
words of the interviewee which results to a deeper understanding of his/her
answers.
o Interviewers may ask follow-up questions and can gain additional information to
ask the interviewee.
 Disadvantages:
o It is a time-consuming process that involves further transcription, reporting and
organization of the answers and data.
o It is high costs since it requires manpower to perform the interview.

2. Questionnaire Method (4 points)

 Advantages:
o Data collection is easy because more respondents can be survey and it is faster
to conduct.
o It can be easily deployed and can be easily accessible through different channels
like web, email, and social media platforms.
 Disadvantages:
o Answers garnered may not be honestly answered and would result to survey fraud.
o Participants may have different interpretations with regards to the questions since
questions are not explained elaborately.

3. Observation Method (4 points)

 Advantages:
o Since it is Simple to collect data, observation does not require tech skills of the
researcher.
o It provides greater accuracy and data quality whereas the observer can view
participants in their natural environment and directly check their behavior.
 Disadvantages:
o It is an expensive method since it requires a high cost, effort, and plenty of time.
o It can take a lot of time if the observer or researcher has to wait for a particular
event to happen.

B. A class of BS Electrical Engineering Students took their first long examination in Engineering
Mechanics and the results are as follows:

4. What is the mean score of the class? (1 point) - 84

5. What is the median of their exam scores? (1 point) - 85

6. Determine the mode of the above data. (1 point) - 85

7. What insight can we gain from your answer on question no. 5? (2 point)
The central value that best represents the total scores of the examination is the score of
85. It can give the best estimate, average or representation of what score can an engineering
student receive when he/she takes that long examination.
8. If another class of 30 Civil Engineering students took the same examination and that the
computed mean grade of all the students from these two classes is 80, can we say that
everybody passed the exam assuming a passing score of 50? Explain your answer. (2 point)
We could not really say if everybody had passed the exam because we could not
determine if all the students in the two classes got scores no lower than 50 or if they all got the
passing grade of 50. For instance, the total sum of the scores of the 30 Civil Engineering
students may not change, yet we can still get a mean of 80, with one student having a score
lower than 50 which means he failed the exam while the scores of the rest are higher than 80
or 90. Therefore, we cannot fully assume that everybody had passed the exam.
9. Considering the additional data from question number 8, what is the mean score of the 30
Civil engineering students? (2 point) 75.33

10. What is the range of the scores of the BS Electrical Engineering Students? (1 point)- 43

C. What is the importance of identifying the Measure of Central Tendency? (5 points)

Identifying the measures of central tendency is important because the measures of
central tendency allow researchers and statisticians to determine the typical numerical point in
a set of data that were collected wherein the data points of any sample are distributed on a
range from lowest value to the highest value. Thus, it tells them where the center value lies in
the distribution of data which serves as a representative value for the whole set. There are
cases that it would tell us how much observations in a data set vary in a certain data. It is
necessary because measures of central tendency allow us to summarize our data set with a
single value hence giving a more accurate picture of the data set whereas we can conclude and
base our interpretation for a certain research.
D. Name at least one advantage and one disadvantage of using each of the Mean, Mode, and
Median of a Sample Data. (6 points)

Advantage Disadvantage
Mean It takes account of all values Either very small or very large
to calculate the average. values can affect the mean.
Mode It is the only average that can There can be more than one
be used if the data set is not mode, and there can also be
in numbers, for example the no mode which means that it
nationalities of students is not always representative
attending BSU Main Campus of the data.

Median It is not affected by either If there is an even number of

very large or very small numbers, the median is
values found by averaging the two
middle numbers. This means
the median value may not
actually be a number in the
original data set.
