This document outlines an experiment to test whether Aunt Linda's homemade vinegar is stronger than commercial brands. It describes measuring the pH of samples of Aunt Linda's vinegar and three store-bought varieties using pH strips and a pH meter. The hypothesis is that Aunt Linda's vinegar will have a lower pH, making it more acidic. The procedure involves taking pH readings of each vinegar and recording the results in tables. The expected result is that Aunt Linda's vinegar will have the lowest pH, supporting the hypothesis that it is stronger than commercial brands.

Title:
Date: 10/12/20
Skill: Planning and Designing

Problem Statement: Aunt Linda routinely makes vinegar at home. She boasts that her vinegar
is stronger than the commercial brands. Plan and design an experiment to determine if this is
so.

Hypothesis: Aunt Linda’s vinegar has a lower pH in comparison to commercial brands

making it more acidic and thus stronger.

Aim: To determine if the vinegar made by Aunt Linda is stronger than the commercial
brands.

Material/Apparatus:
4 pH strips
pH colour scale
pH meter
Grace Vinegar
Cal’s Vinegar
Eve Vinegar
Aunt Linda’s Vinegar
4 beakers

Procedure:
1. In each beaker, measure 30cm^3 of each brand of vinegar.
2. Insert the pH strips in the first beaker and hold for 20 seconds before removing.
3. Check the colour change of the strip and refer to the pH colour scale.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to the other 3 containers.
5. Place the pH meter in the first solution , press the button on the side and leave for at
least 2 minutes for a stable reading.
6. After the first reading is done, record the pH.
7. Repeat the procedure to obtain a second reading for accuracy. Record the reading.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 for the other 3 containers.
9. Record your results in two suitable tables.

Variables:
Manipulated variable- the vinegars
Controlled variable- volume of vinegars
Responding Variable- the pH

Data to be collected:
Brand of Vinegar Colour Change of Strip

Aunt Linda’s

Eve

Grace

Cal

Brand of Vinegar First pH Reading Second pH Reading

Aunt Linda’s

Eve

Grace

Cal

Expected Results:
When using the pH strip, the resulting color will tell you how strong the vinegar is.
The pH strip is expected to turn pink when placed in vinegar as they are acids, and strong
ones at that. Specifically, acids that have a pH of 2 turn the strip pink. The pH meter tells the
exact strength of the vinegar. The lower the pH, the more acid the vinegar is. It is expected
that Aunt Linda’s homemade vinegar has a lower pH than that of the other commercial
brands, thus making it stronger. If this is so then the hypothesis would have been proven to be
true.
