High School English Summer Homework 2019

“Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17

This year’s summer work gives students the opportunity to grow by engaging with ideas
alongside a trusted mentor. We want to put those ideas to practice, consider them, discuss them,
and grow from them in partnership.

For this year’s summer assignment, students will choose a mentor who exhibits spiritual maturity
who will push the student to grow in their own spiritual development. Students should choose a
mentor who can agree to meet with them at least 3 times throughout the summer to complete two
important tasks:

1. Mentors will choose an age-appropriate book for students and mentors to read together.
They should meet at least once before starting the book and once afterwards to reflect
upon it (although we certainly encourage you to meet more!). Students will also be
required to write a reflection both of the book and of their discussion with their mentor.
NOTE: Since all students will be reading different books, the school cannot provide
books for every student. Either choose something that is available in the library or
students will need to borrow or purchase their book.
2. Students and mentors will be required to complete a service project together. Students
will then be asked to reflect upon the experience with their mentor and share their
reflections.

Students must respond to several prompts and submit the response via turnitin.com (instructions
are included later in this packet). The “Mentor Agreement” sheet is due by June 5. All other
responses are due by the first day of school but the timeline below is recommended in order to
help students plan their time.

Recommended Timeline
By June 5th- Question 1 (required)
By June 15th- Question 2
By July 1- Service Project
By July 15- Question 3
By August 1- Question 4
By the first day of school- Question 5

Attached is an agreement between the students, mentor, and the student’s parents that further
explains the project and gives parental approval to the mentor relationship. Students will be able
to give this agreement to their mentor to explain the project and must submit this sheet via
Turnitin signed by all parties by June 5.

Your 2019-2020 English teacher will grade your responses according to the rubric in this
handout. Also, individual teachers may ask students to interact with their experiences in different
ways during the first week of the 2019-2020 school year.
Turnitin.com: How To
Most students should have their own turnitin.com account. If not, they will be required
to make one using their school email.

Students will login and sign up for their own grade’s class (the grade that they will be
for the 2019-2020 school year). It does not matter what English course they are taking;
they will sign up by grade.
