2. PMI
A. PMI is an online membership opportunity that provides tools and networking to expand
your project management career. There are opportunities for certifications and online
learning. I even saw a tab with upcoming events (mostly virtual).
B. I found a chapter in Sioux Falls, SD called the Sioux Empire, South Dakota Chapter. This
is the only chapter I found for my state.
C. It looks like there are ten knowledge areas in the PMBOK Guide: project integration
management, project scope management, project time management, project cost
management, project quality management, project human resources management,
project communications management, project risk management, project procurement
management and project stakeholder management. The video on this guide mentioned
that it’s basically everything about project management combined into one “how-to”
book. It focuses on best practices and the main things you need to know and do to
properly execute a project.
D. After searching through this site, it appears to be an extremely large global network of
individuals and companies that seek to grow in project management. There are many
paths to take from memberships, online learning, certifications, virtual events and more.
They have also been in business for over 50 years which tells me they are a well-
established program.
3. The Hokies Lunch Group
A. Part A
a. Fatma is in the defining stage. I know this because she specifically stated, “We’ve
been struggling defining the scope of the project” (Larson & Gray, 2020, p. 24).
Her company is still working on establishing the goals, specifications,
responsibilities, etc.
b. Viktoria is in the executing stage. I know this because it clearly stated that she
and her company had just completed their second protype and were entering a
very important phase of testing (Larson & Gray, 2020).
c. Jasper is also in the executing stage. I think he is in this stage because he
references his co-workers a lot and how they work together on executing their
project.
B. Part B
a. Fatma is now in the planning stage. She mentioned that they had completed a
two-day retreat that focused on the risks and safety of their project.
b. Viktoria is still in the executing stage. The executing stage is typically the longest
stage and includes testing and revisions. Since one of their prototypes failed,
they luckily had a back-up battery thanks to a good project manager and will
now test that one instead.
c. Jasper is also still in the executing stage. His company hasn’t moved to the
“closing stage” yet because it clearly stated that they had missed some
milestones and were working crazy hours to try and get the project completed
and delivered to their customer.
C. Part C
a. Fatma is finally in the executing stage. She mentioned that her two bosses were
even working together to renovate the building (Larson & Gray, 2020).
b. Viktoria is in the closing stage. The text clearly stated that Viktoria and her team
had successful wrapped up their PAX 2 project and were completing reviews
together.
c. Jasper’s project was shut down and he was out of work. His company wasn’t able
to fork out additional funding and therefore they shut down the project
completely without delivering a final product. This could technically be
considered the closing stage, not because they delivered a product, but because
Jasper can now evaluate his work and learn lessons from it.
