The VAZ-21214 engine is equipped with a distributed fuel injection system (a separate nozzle for each
cylinder) with electronic control.

Always turn off the ignition when servicing or repairing the engine management system.
Disconnect the controller from the wiring harness when welding. The controller contains electronic
components that can be damaged by static electricity, so do not touch the terminals with your
hands. Remove the controller before drying the vehicle in a drying chamber (after painting). With
the engine running, do not disconnect or repair electrical connectors (including battery terminals).
Do not start the engine if the battery and ground terminals on the engine and body are loose or
dirty.

The injection system controller (control unit) is a special-purpose minicomputer. It contains three
types of memory - random access memory (RAM), programmable read only memory (EPROM) and
electrically programmable memory (EPROM).

The EPROM contains the actual program (algorithm) of the computer and the calibration data (settings).
Thus, the EPROM determines the most important parameters of the engine operation: the nature of the
torque and power curves, fuel consumption, etc. The EPROM is non-volatile, i.e. its contents do not change
when the power is turned off. The EPROM is installed in the connector on the controller board and can be
replaced separately (if the controller fails, the serviceable EPROM can be rearranged to the new controller).
The immobilizer codes are written into the EEPROM when the keys are taught (see the car's service book).
This memory is also non-volatile.
The controller is located in the passenger compartment, on the side panel in the driver's foot area.

Injection system sensors provide the controller with information about the engine operation parameters
(except for the vehicle speed sensor), on the basis of which it calculates the moment, duration and order of
opening of the injectors, the moment and the order of sparking. If individual sensors fail, the controller
switches to bypass algorithms; at the same time, some parameters of the engine (power, throttle response,
efficiency) may deteriorate, but driving with such faults is possible. The only exception is the crankshaft

Crankshaft position sensor installed in the hole in the camshaft cover bracket. It provides the controller
with information about the angular position and crankshaft speed. The sensor is an inductor; it reacts to
the passage of the reluctor wheel teeth close to the sensor core. Two adjacent teeth on the disc are
sheared off, forming a depression. When it passes, the sensor generates a so-called "reference"
synchronization pulse at each revolution of the crankshaft. The installation gap between the core and the
teeth is 1.0 ± 0.2 mm.

Coolant temperature sensor screwed into the outlet on the cylinder head. It is a thermistor, at a
temperature of –40 ° С its resistance should be 100 kΩ, at 100 ° С - 177 Ω. The controller supplies the
sensor with a stabilized voltage of 5 V through a resistor and calculates the composition of the mixture from
the voltage drop. In the event of a sensor failure, the controller switches the electric fans of the cooling
system to continuous operation.

Throttle position sensor (TPS) mounted on the throttle shaft and is a potentiometer. A stabilized voltage
of 5 V is supplied to one end of its winding, and the other is connected to ground. The signal for the
controller is taken from the third pin of the potentiometer (slider). To check the sensor, turn on the ignition

In case of failure of the TPS, its functions are taken over by the mass air flow sensor. In this case, the idle
speed does not fall below 1200 min. -1 .

The MAF sensor is located between the air filter and the intake hose. It consists of two sensors (working
and control) and a heating resistor. The passing air cools one of the sensors, and the electronics module
converts the temperature difference between the sensors into an output signal for the controller. If the
mass air flow sensor fails, its functions are taken over by the TPS.

Knock sensor bolted to the top of the cylinder block on the right side. The action of the sensor is based on
the piezoelectric effect: when a piezoelectric plate is compressed, a potential difference arises at its ends.
During detonation, voltage pulses appear in the sensor, according to which the controller adjusts the
ignition timing. For the sensor to work properly, the mounting bolt must be tightened to the recommended
torque.

The oxygen concentration sensor (oxygen sensor, lambda probe) is installed in the front pipe of the
exhaust system (see Exhaust system). The oxygen in the exhaust gas creates a potential difference at the
sensor output ranging from about 0.1 (high oxygen - lean) to 0.9 volts (low oxygen - rich). Based on a
signal from the oxygen sensor, the controller adjusts the fuel supply to the injectors in the cylinders so that
the composition of the exhaust gases is optimal for the efficient operation of the catalytic converter
(oxygen sensor voltage is about 0.5 V). For normal operation, the oxygen sensor must have a temperature
of at least 360 ° C, therefore, for a quick warm-up after starting the engine, a heating element is built into
the sensor.

The controller constantly supplies a stabilized reference voltage of 0.45 ± 0.10 V to the oxygen sensor
circuit. Until the sensor is warmed up, the reference voltage remains unchanged. In this case, the controller
controls the injection system without taking into account the voltage at the sensor. As soon as the sensor
warms up, it begins to change the reference voltage. Then the controller turns off the heating of the sensor
and begins to take into account the oxygen sensor signal.

The vehicle speed sensor is installed in the transfer case next to the speedometer drive. Its principle of
operation is based on the Hall effect. The sensor sends to the controller square-wave voltage pulses (the
lower level - no more than 1 V, the upper - not less than 5 V) with a frequency proportional to the speed of
rotation of the driving wheels.

Idle speed regulator maintains idle speed within 820–880 min –1 regardless of engine load (in particular,
when switching on and off powerful electricity consumers). It is a stepper motor with a micrometer screw.
When the screw moves, the cross-section of the bypass air channel between the inlet pipe and the receiver
changes (bypassing the throttle valve). It is recommended to replace a defective regulator at a service
station where there is a device that allows it to be controlled (sometimes during installation, the protrusion
of the regulator screw must be reduced).

Ignition system is part of the engine management system. It consists of an ignition module, high voltage
wires and spark plugs. During operation, the system does not require maintenance and adjustment. The
ignition module is mounted on a bracket attached to three studs on the left front of the engine. It includes
two electronic control units and two high voltage transformers (ignition coils). Candle wires are connected
to the terminals of the high-voltage windings of the transformers - to one of the 1st and 4th cylinders, to
the other - of the 2nd and 3rd. Thus, the spark simultaneously skips in two cylinders (1-4 or 2-3) - in one
during the compression stroke (working spark), in the other during exhaust (idle). The ignition module is
non-separable; if it fails, it is replaced.

Spark plug - А17ДВРМ or their analogs, with a 4–10 kOhm noise suppression resistor and a copper core.
The gap between the electrodes is 1.00–1.13 mm.

Four fuses and three relays for the engine management system (most importantly, the electric
petrol pump and electric fans of the engine cooling system) are located in the passenger compartment
under the instrument panel on the left side. Power contacts of all relays are closed by controller commands.
Three 15 A fuses protect the DC power supply circuit of the control unit, the main relay and its circuits, the
power contacts of the petrol pump relay and its circuit. A 30 A fuse protects the power contacts of the relay
and the power supply circuit of the electric fans of the engine cooling system. In addition to the fuses, a
fuse is provided in the power supply circuit of the engine control system (from the "plus" terminal of the
battery to the control system fuse block). It is located in the engine compartment and is made in the form
of a piece of black wire with a cross section of 1 mm 2 (the cross section of the main wire is 6 mm 2 ).
