Calculation of Count Ne of Yarn and Roving

The document is a lab report summarizing an experiment to determine the count of various textile materials - lap, sliver, roving, and yarn. Samples of each material were measured and weighed. Using the measurements and weights, along with the formula for English count system, the count was calculated for each material. The counts obtained were: lap - 0.001405 Ne, sliver - 0.12756 Ne, roving - 0.93 Ne, and yarn - 29.94 Ne. The goal of the experiment was to understand the method for determining the count of various textile products.

Title:
Find the count of Lap, Sliver, roving and yarn
1
Abstract:
Determination of the count of Lap, Sliver, yarn and roving is practically involved,
taking sample i.e. 120 yards of yarn and 15 yards of roving, 6 yards of sliver, 1
yard of LAP sheet weighing them. The units of weight are converted into required
units i.e. grains. And then calculated by the formula of English count system. In
calculated result count of yarn is 29.94 Ne and count of roving is 0.93 Ne and Lap
0.001405 Ne and Sliver 0.12756 Ne. Count is not the measure of thickness, it’s
basically linear density of cotton products.

Introduction:
There are two types of count system (1) Direct system (2) Indirect system. English
count is an indirect system. Here we calculated English count for Lap, Sliver, yarn
and roving. The output of scutcher in blow room is Lap. Sliver is output of card and
drawing. The product delivered by the roving machines is called roving. While yarn
is a continuous strand of natural or synthetic fibers.
In this experiment, the length of yarn was 120 yards and the length of roving was 15
yards and 6 yards of Sliver and 1 yard of Lap. Wooden Template is used for Lap
Sheet. Wrapping drum was used for roving and Sliver and wrapping reel was used for
yarn. The circumference of both drum and reel was 1 yard. The formula used to
calculate the count was:
Ne= 8.33*l (yards)/w (grains).
Objectives:
 To understand the method to determine the count of Lap.
 To understand the method to determine the count of Sliver.
 To understand the method to determine the count of Roving.
 To understand the method to determine the count of Yarn.

2
Conversion:

1 grams = 15.432 grains

1 oz. = 28.35 grams
1 oz. = 437.5 grains
1 lbs. = 16 oz.
1 lbs. = 7000 grains
1 lbs. = 453.6 grams

Equipment and Materials:

 Wooden template for measuring sample of Lap sheet.
 Wrapping reel for preparing the samples of yarn.

 Wrapping drum for preparing the samples of roving and sliver.

 Weight balance.

 Yarn (120 yard) 5 samples.

 Sliver (15 yards) 5 samples.

Procedure:
Procedure for Sliver.
First of all, sample of sliver was taken. With the help of wrapping drum 6 yards of sliver was
measured. The circumference of the wrapping drum was one yard; 6 yards was measured by
revolving the wrapping drum 6 times. With the help of weighing balance, the weight of
measured length of sliver was calculated. That weight was measured in grains. Then, number
of yards per grain was calculated. Then, count of sliver was calculated by formula.

The Lap has count 0.001405yards/grains.

The sliver has count 0.12756 yards/grains.
The roving has count 0.93742yards/grains.
The yarn has count 29.94yards/grains.

Discussions:
English system is an indirect system. In this experiment, the count of yarn is 29.94
yards/grains and the count of roving is 0.93742 yards/grains and count of Lap 0.001405 and
Sliver has 0.12756. It means the count of yarn is greater than the count of roving. Its mean
yarn is finer than roving.

Conclusion:
The count of yarn measured in grains/gram 29.94.Which means it is a courser fiber yarn.
From this we conclude that if there will be indirect system then with increase in the value,
fineness will be increased and vice versa. While in the direct system, with the increase in the
value, the fineness decreases and vice versa. The count variation is < 1%.
