This document discusses dragline excavators used in construction and mining. It describes the basic components and working of a dragline, including dragging material with the bucket, lifting it, swinging, and dumping. There are three main types: wheel, crawler, and truck mounted. Draglines are used for excavation, dredging, surface mining, and more. Advantages include operating on firm ground and excavating/depositing in one operation, while disadvantages are lower output and digging force compared to shovels. Large draglines can cost $50-100 million, and major manufacturers are listed from India.

Dragline Construction Management (2180611)

1. INTRODUCTION:
 The basic character of this machine is to drag the bucket against the material to be dug and
fill the excavated material into hauling units such as trucks or tractors or deposit it into
dams or embankments near pit from which it is excavated.

 Dragline excavator is used for civil engineering projects and surface mining. It has the
ability to excavate very deep down the earth. Word “drag” is used because it has the ability
to drag material at far distance from the machine.

 Main components of dragline are drag rope, large bucket, boom, hoist rope and driving
motors.

2. WORKING OF DRAGLINE:
 In a typical cycle of excavation, the bucket is positioned above the material to be
excavated. The bucket is then lowered and the dragrope is then drawn so that the bucket is
dragged along the surface of the material. The bucket is then lifted by using the hoist rope.
A swing operation is then performed to move the bucket to the place where the material is
to be dumped. The dragrope is then released causing the bucket to tilt and empty. This is
called a dump operation.
 On crane-type draglines, the bucket can also be 'thrown' by winding up to the jib and then
releasing a clutch on the drag cable. This would then swing the bucket like a pendulum.
Once the bucket had passed the vertical, the hoist cable would be released thus throwing
the bucket. On smaller draglines, a skilled operator could make the bucket land about one-
half the length of the jib further away than if it had just been dropped. On larger draglines,
this is not a common practice.

3. TYPES OF DRAGLINE:
1. Wheel mounted dragline
2. Crawler mounted dragline
3. Truck mounted dragline/portable dragline

4. USES OF DRAGLINE:
 Dragline is used for;

1. Road excavation
2. Deep down pile driving
3. Construction of ports, harbor etc.
4. Surface mining
5. Deep down excavation
6. Under water excavation

5. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES:

 ADVANTAGES:

 It does not have to go into a pit or hole for excavating the earth. It may operate on
natural firm ground.
 A dragline is excellent for excavating trenches without shoring.
 Excavating and deposition is done in just one operation.
 Range of working is more than power shovel.

 DISADVANTAGES:

 Output is less as compared to shovel.

 It has less digging force.
 Due to Operator being somewhat away from the pit, sometimes it is inconvenient and
risky.

6. COST & MANUFACTURERS:

 A large dragline system used in the open pit mining industry costs approximately US$50 –
100 million.
 Major Manufacturers and suppliers of draglines in India are listed below:
o Earth Moving Machinery Spares & Services, Bengaluru
o Gowtham Industries, Coimbatore
o Tirupati International, Kolkata
o Everest Road Equipments, New Delhi
o Bhilwara Sales Corporation, Bhilwara
o JDC Global Private Limited, New Delhi
