CHE211 Tutorial Questions (I)

This document contains 16 tutorial questions for an Introduction to Chemical Engineering course. The questions cover topics like mixtures of air and other gases, evaporation of water, dew points, condensation, relative humidity, phase equilibria, and using steam tables to determine phase for water at different temperatures and pressures. Key concepts assessed include partial pressures, mole fractions, vapor-liquid equilibrium, degrees of freedom from the phase rule, and using property data like specific volume to identify phases of water.

CHE 211: Introduction to Chemical Engineering

(Alpha Semester; 2017/2018 Academic Session)

TUTORIAL QUESTIONS I

1.

2.

3.

4.

5. A mixture of air and benzene contains 10 mol % benzene and 105 kPa pressure. At what temperature
can the first liquid form? What is the liquid ?

6. What is the minimum number of m3 of dry air at 21oC and 101 kPa required to evaporate 10kg of
water at 21oC?

7. What is the dew point of a mixture of air and water vapour at 60oC and 1 atm in which the mole
fraction of the air is 12%? The total pressure on the mixture is constant.
8. Air at 25oC and 100 kPa has a dew point of 16oC. If you want to remove 50% of the initial
moisture in the air (at a constant pressure of 100 kPa), to what temperature should you cool te
air?

9. 1000m3 of air saturated with water vapour at 30oC and 99.0 kPa is cooled to 14oC and
compressed to 100 kPa. How many kg of H2O condense out?

10. The air in your bedroom is at 20oC and 75% relative humidity. What window temperature will
cause water to start condensing on the glass?

11. Toluene is mixed with air at 21oC in such proportions that the partial of the vaour is 10 mmHg.
The total pressure is 745 mmHg. Calculate the following:
(a) The relative saturation
(b) The moles of toluene per mole of vapour-free gas.
(c) The weight of toluene per unit weight of vapour-free gas
(d) The percentage of toluene by volume.

12. If a gas at 60.0oC and 101.6 kPa abs. hass a molal humidity of 0.030, determine
(a) The relative humidity
(b) The dew point of the gas (in oC)

13. Determine the number of degrees of freedom from the phase rule for the following systems at
equilibrium:
(a) Liquid water, water vapour and nitrogen
(b) Liquid water with dissolved acetone in equilibrium with their vapours.
(c) H2O(g), H2O(l), CuSO4.5H2O in solution.

14.

15. For each of the conditions of temperature and pressure listed below for water, state whether
the water is a solid phase, liquid phase, superheated or is a saturated mixture, and if the latter,
indicate how you would calculate the quality. Use the steam tables to assist in the calculations.
