Chapter 5: Information Systems in an Organization (Week 11 to Week 12)

1. A student who would like to take tuition classes at ABC Tuition Center has to register and make
payment at the registration counter. The clerk at the counter will enter the student details such as
name, IC number, tuition subject, tuition class, current school result and so on into the computerized
tuition management system. All student personal data and results are stored in a centralized tuition
database at a server. All desktop computers are installed with Windows 7 and networked to the
server via a wire/wireless LAN. The principal, tutors and clerks have been trained to ensure efficient
use of the system. User manuals providing step-by-step instructions on how to use the system are
also available.

a. An information system consists of a combination of people, procedures, data, software and


hardware that work together to produce quality information. Describe each of these FIVE (5)
components of an information system. (5
marks)

b. Give ONE (1) example of each component of computerized tuition management system based
on the above scenario. (5
marks)

2. XYZ Bank is a medium sized bank in Malaysia. It has about 300 branches located in various parts of
the country. Identify the following with examples:

a. THREE (3) levels of management in XYZ BANK. (6

b. Types of decision made by each user. (6


marks)

3. Define the following systems: (6

a. Transaction Processing System (TPS)

b. Management Information System (MIS)

c. Decision Support System (DSS)

4. Classify each of the following information systems, as one of these types: Transaction Processing
System (TPS), Management Information System (MIS), or Decision Support System (DSS). (3
