Prime Minister
Prime Minister
Thus starts the teaching vocabulary in the class. It is quite fun, interesting and exciting for the
students and they learn new words and memorize the spelling of the words which they have
already known.
Children are creative and they like creative ideas. If you repeat the same thing again and
again or teach the students the something then they will not concentrate on study. The class
will be noisy and students will learn nothing. You may force them to be quiet in the
classroom and they may be silent but will be blank headed.
The easiest way to teach vocabulary is to make small group and start spelling contest so that
that they remember what they have learned and try to understand new words from the friends.
Make a group of four or five students. Or you can make of more than that depending on the
size of students. Then start the spelling contest. There will be two groups in each team. They
will be rival group. While teaching English in a school in the UK, one day I thought to spend
time making them fun. In fact, I wanted to take rest during the class as it was a cover period
for me. So I told them to form their own groups. When they formed the group, we started the
vocabulary contest.
I started the word. We had studied British Parliament so started the word, "Prime Minister."
The group 'A' replied with the last letter- R and his answer was Ready. Then within a second,
they were saying: Yesterday- Yam- Might- Taste- Ear- Rain- Night- Tiger- Rabbit.
At the end of the lesson, I revised what they have learned that day. I found that each group
has learned over a dozen new vocabulary. And interestingly, they have memorized many
spelling which they had forgotten. It is very fun. And some of the students of lower level can
be given books to get words from the books but those words must be memorized or learned at
the end of the day. It worked amazingly. Students came up with many new vocabulary.
Some of the students, who had taken the words from the books said that they knew new
words. For example, a student of year 7 wrote 'eclipse' and 'epicenter' in his essay after some
days. It was unusual for him to write such words. I asked him how he knew those words. He
said: "Sir, I knew these words while playing the vocabulary game."
It works well. If the students are in the secondary level then it is better to start in one subject
area. For example they can say words related to Science or Chemistry, Physics, Biology,
Geography or History. It is quite easy, interesting and exciting to learn new words.
Tomorrow, I am starting the same method to year 11 students. There will be science group
and humanities. Science group will form their own group and find new words related to
science only and geography and history will have general vocabulary finding.
It will be quite exciting and at the end of the day, you will find students interested to be in
your class and after all they will know something new.
