Important information about your Jobseeker’s Benefit

1. Increase for Qualified Adult

If your spouse/civil partner/cohabitant is dependent on you (not in receipt of an ETB, VTOS or certain
Social Welfare payments in his/her own right) or is on a low income, you may qualify for an increase in your
payment (Increase for a Qualified Adult – IQA). If your QA earns less than €100.00 a week, the maximum
rate of IQA is payable, a reduced rate is payable if the earnings are between €100.00 and €310.00 a week.
No IQA is payable if the income is in excess of €310.00 a week.

2. Increase for Qualified Child

An increase for a qualified child is payable in respect of each qualified child who normally resides with you.
Half this amount is payable if your spouse/civil partner/cohabitant has a gross weekly income between
€310.01 and €400.00, is in receipt of an ETB payment, certain Social Welfare payments or
educational/training allowances. There is no payment for children if the gross weekly income of your
spouse/civil partner/cohabitant is more than € 400.00.

3. Leaving the State

You must tell us immediately if you or any of your dependants intend to leave the State.

4. Holidays
You may take up to 2 weeks paid holidays in a calendar year. You must tell us before you go.

5. Payment at the Post Office

You must collect your payment on the due date. If you do not, it will be returned to the Department and
there may be a delay in re-issuing it to you. You will need your Public Services Card to collect your
payment.

6. Duration of payment
Jobseeker’s Benefit is paid for 9 months (234 days) for people with 260 or more paid PRSI contributions. It
is paid for 6 months (156 days) for people with fewer than 260 paid PRSI contributions. Each full week of
Jobseeker’s Benefit counts as 6 days. If a claim links to a previous Jobseeker’s Benefit claim (within 26
weeks) the duration of payment will be reduced.

7. Relevant Tax Year

The relevant tax year is two years previous to the date of your claim e.g. for a Jobseeker’s Benefit claim in
2016 the relevant year is 2014. If a claim links to an earlier claim then the relevant tax year that applied to
the earlier claim also applies to the linked claim.

8. Working part-time
If you work on a casual or part-time basis, you will receive one-fifth of the weekly rate for each day that is
payable. However, the number of days worked and the number of days of paid Jobseeker’s Benefit cannot
exceed 5 in any Jobseeker’s Benefit week (Thursday to Wednesday).

9. Waiting Days
The first three days of a claim are not paid. These are known as waiting days. However, if your claim is
linked to an earlier claim you will be paid from the first day of the claim.

10. Holiday Pay

Jobseeker’s Benefit is not paid for any day you receive holiday pay from your employer. If you are a
substitute teacher/special needs assistant, please contact your Intreo Centre/Branch Office about the
special arrangements that apply to you.

UP2 SDM 05/19

11. Supplementary Welfare Allowance
If you were in receipt of Supplementary Welfare Allowance while awaiting a decision on your claim, the
amount of Supplementary Welfare Allowance paid will be deducted from any arrears due to you.

12. Overpayments
If you were overpaid on a Social Welfare scheme in the past, we may make deductions from your weekly
payment to recover the overpayment. Your Intreo Centre/Branch Office will contact you in this regard.

13. Taxation
Depending on your circumstances, you may be liable for income tax on some or all of your Jobseekers
Benefit payment. Tax is not charged on increases paid for any dependent children. Tax is also not
charged on the first €13 per week of your payment.

The Department will pay Jobseekers Benefit to you without deducting tax. The Department will, however,
notify Revenue of the taxable amount of Jobseekers Benefit to be taken into account for income tax
purposes. This means you do not have to do anything for the correct tax to be paid.

Information about the taxation of social welfare payments is available from Revenue and on the Jobs and
Pensions page of the Revenue website www.revenue.ie
You do not pay PRSI and USC on your Jobseekers Benefit payment.

14. Efforts to find work

You should keep any documentary evidence you have in relation to efforts to seek work. You will be asked
to provide evidence that you are genuinely seeking work.

15. Sunday Working

Sunday is treated like any other day in the week, as a day of employment or unemployment as appropriate.
