CODE OF CONDUCT APPLICABLE TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSIONALS (AP)

OF THE
GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL OF SRI LANKA

Purpose of the Code of Conduct

(a) To set forth standards of conduct and professionalism expected from Associate
Professionals when performing their duties and functions
(b) To guide Associate Professionals to act in the manner that enhances stakeholder
confidence in the process of assessment and certification of the building projects
assigned to them.

The Code cannot address all possible circumstances that Associate Professionals may face in
performing their role. The Code also does not attempt to replicate the additional requirements
(if any) placed on Associate Professionals by the Accreditation Board of the Green Building
Council of Sri Lanka or to provide standards in relation to business practices.

When carrying out duties and functions, an Associate Professional shall;

1. Support the implementation of, and uphold compliance with, GREENSL® Rating System for
Built Environment in order to transform the Sri Lanka construction industry with green
building practices and to fully adopt sustainability as the means by which our
environment thrives, economy prospers and society grows to ensure the future
wellbeing of our motherland.
2. Take reasonable steps to ensure that the organization/person who has given the
assignment of Green assessment functions is made aware of any matters affecting the
rights or authority of the Associate Professionals to carry out his or her contractual
duties and that the GBCSL is kept informed of any change in circumstances relating to
those rights or authority.
3. Prevent from providing misleading information to any regulatory, government or
professional body or any other person relating to the performance of assessment and
certification functions.
4. Act with honesty, good faith and equity, and without any discrimination towards fellow
professionals involved in the Green certification process.
5. Exercise reasonable care and attention in carrying out duties, and in the exercise of
authority.

6. Take all reasonable steps to obtain all relevant information and facts to support decision
making process and to ascertain the appropriate level of certification to be awarded to
each project.
7. Inform appropriate parties of the results of work performed; revealing all significant
facts relating to the Green certification project undertaken.
8. Take care to maintain the integrity and reliability and ensure the confidentiality of
documents or the information obtained from clients in the process of performing official
duties.
9. Maintain expected level of competency in the respective fields and agree to undertake
only the activities that can be practically fulfilled with his/her skills, knowledge and
competency.
10. Prevent taking advantage of his/her status, position or authority for the purpose of
obtaining, either directly or indirectly, any preferential treatment or other improper
advantage for himself/herself.
11. Strictly prevent from seeking or accepting a gift or benefit that is intended to, likely to,
or could be perceived by an impartial observer as likely to, cause him or her to act in a
biased or unfair manner in the course of performing his/her duties.
12. Serve in the interest of all stakeholders in a lawful manner, while maintaining high
standards of conduct and character, and not discrediting the profession or the Council
Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct can result in an investigation into an Associate
Professional's conduct and, ultimately, disciplinary action in terms of the Code of Discipline of
the GBCSL.
