Geotechnical report

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Wood is developing for POSCO E&C the engineering service which includes the review
of Definitive Feasibility Study of part of the Wet Area, and the development of Basic
Engineering for these areas of the Santo Domingo Project.

The project comprises the implementation of a copper-iron-gold concentrator plant with

a nominal processing capacity of 60.000 tpd, a concentrate pipeline, a water pipeline, a
concentrate filtration plant and shiploading facilities, at the Third Region of Chile.

The mine and plant site are located 50 km west from El Salvador, 60 km east from
Chañaral and 130 km north from Copiapó, at an elevation ranging from 1.000 to 1.280
m.a.s.l, in the municipality of Diego de Almagro.

The magnetite concentrates filtration plant and the ship loading facilities are located at
Punta Roca Blanca area, in the municipality of Caldera.

2.0 SCOPE

This report covers the design, at a basic engineer level, of the air and water service
equipment and pumps, in accord to the design loads and the structural design criteria
M40405-0000-DD20-DSC-0001.

Bearing soil material

Geotechnical report states that the structural fill will have a unit weight higher than 2,0

The following structural fill properties are used for analysis:

 Soil type, NCh2369:2003 : II

 Unit weight :  = 1,7 tonf/m3 Why is not
considered this

The weight of the tank contents is considered and calculated by multiplying the total
volume of the tank with the density of the content. The densities and volume are show
in the following Table 5-1.

5.2 Live loads (LL)

Live loads are part of the pump loads. See pump loads for live loads. No additional live
loads are considered.

5.3 Earthquake loads (EL)

Foundation seismic loads are obtained through a static analysis, considering the
following NCh2369:2003 parameters:

 Soil type : II Ok, but why is not used the

 Elastic response reduction factor : R=4 same criteria for pumps?
I agree with 1,0 for pumps

 Seismic importance : I = 1,2 important a backup.

 Max. horizontal seismic coeff. : Ch max = 0,264 2

 Vertical seismic coefficient : Cv = 0,267

The effect of the earthquake over the tank content is evaluated using the equations
present in the reference 5 for impulsive and convective coefficients and loads.

Where are presented those operational
requirements?
Please add in references and specify the
section where appear.

The dimensions of these foundations are defined by operational requirements, which explains the
high safety factors.

According to the design criteria for structures, for light vibratory equipment the foundation weight
must be 2.5 times the weight of the pump it supports. Table 6-5 shows that this is complied for
each pump.
