SCADA Gateway, Smart Solution For Combining Conventional Substation and Substation Automation System
Abstract: Currently, substation development and construction lead to substation automation system (SAS) that use Intellegent
Electronic Device (IED) with open system protokol.
Development of remote station by conventional way use Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) need human resources and long time
because we have to connect point to point. In this way, additional point need RTU modul that expensive and sometimes obsolete
RTU (rare / not manufactured anymore). To replace with a new type of RTU is also not efficient because of the previously ex-
isting system has been installed SCADA points in large enough quantities.
This paper propose system of SCADA gateway to solve that problem. This idea came from the addition of the transmission line
at Tello 150 KV substation, but the capacity of RTU for SCADA system is inadequate. Adding a RTU modul, is no longer possible
because it is obsolete RTU. With the ability as a concentrator and protocol converter, this system is capable of combining in-
formation from existing RTU and new IEDs into one system. Points for scada remote station also use data that collected in
SCADA gateway so to install a new equipment and integration to master station is faster , no need many additional material and
human resources.
This is very advantageous, because by utilizing existing equipment in substation and system-based data communications wiring,
then the integration of equipment is more practical and efficient when compared with conventional systems that use additional
equipment and wiring point to point from each of the installed equipment. This system has two main functions, ie as a remote
station that is connected to a master station in the control center and as a Substation Automation for data center at a local subs-
tation which is equipped with a Human Machine Interface (HMI) for monitoring the overall system by the operator.
The effectivness of this system already have implemented in three unit substation in early 2008 and will be expanded for 36
conventional substations.
