Lab 1 Anatomical Description
Lab 1 Anatomical Description
Learning objective: To begin to identify joint actions, planes, and axes of motion for any human movement.
Activities: Divide into groups and have someone in your group demonstrate a chin up (palms facing in) and a
standing vertical jump. Then analyze the activities by completing the charts on page 2 and draw stick
figures of the initial and final positions in each phase.
2. VERTICAL JUMP: Phases: preparatory and propulsive. Joints: shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle.
4. SPRINTING: Analyze the sprinter shown in the sequence photos included with your lab by
completing the charts on pages 3 and 4. The analysis will encompass one full stride from Frame 1
through Frame 8. Seven phases will be analyzed, each phase representing the movement occurring
from one frame to the next. Analyze the movements at the right hip, right knee, right ankle, right
shoulder, and right elbow joints.
The charts you complete on pages 2 through 4 are your write up for this lab. For this lab, you are allowed (and
encouraged) to use a pencil when completing the charts for your write up.

1. Inset video from your library into the analyzer. (chin up)
2. Create a Key Position (1) at the beginning of the video.
a. Label Key Position- “Plane of Motion and Axis of Rotation”
b. In the description- name the plane of motion and the axis of rotation.
3. Fast forward through the video using the “frame forward” button until the subject is at the
lowest point of the chin up and create a key position (2) labeled “lowest point”.
4. On this key position use the line tool to draw lines from:
a. The Shoulder to the Elbow
b. The Elbow to the wrist
5. Use text tool to insert the following information:
a. Joint Movement of:
i. Shoulder
ii. Elbow
6. Fast forward the video until the subject reaches the peak height in the chin up.
7. Create a Key Position (3) and label it “Peak”.
8. On this key position use the line tool to draw lines from:
a. The shoulder to the elbow
b. The elbow to the wrist
9. Use text tool to insert the following information:
a. A. Joint Movement of:
i. Shoulder
ii. Elbow

10. Fast forward the video until a point where the subject is in the down phase of the motion.
11. Create a Key Position (4) and label it “Down Phase”.
12. On this key position use the line tool to draw lines from:
a. The shoulder to the elbow
b. The elbow to the wrist
13. Use text tool to insert the following information:
a. A. Joint Movement of:
i. Shoulder
ii. Elbow
14. Once you have completed 1-10, you are finished with the first video. Click back on the
storyboard and insert the second video, vertical jump, in the empty video slot next to the first
video.
15. Create a Key Position (1), at the very beginning of the video.
16. Label Key Position- “Plane of Motion and Axis of Rotation”
a. In the description, name the plane of motion and the axis of rotation.
17. Fast forward the video until the subject is in the preparatory phase (down phase) of the jump.
18. Create a Key Position (2)
a. Label Key position “Preparatory Phase”
19. On this key position use the line tool to draw lines from:
a. Shoulder to Elbow
b. Shoulder to Hip
c. Hip to Knee
d. Knee to Ankle
e. Ankle to Toe
20. Use text tool to describe the following joint actions:
a. Shoulder
b. Hip
c. Knee
d. Ankle
21. Fast forward the video until the subject enters the propulsive, or up, phase of the motion.
22. Create a Key Position (3)
a. Label Key Position “Propulsive Phase”
23. Use line tool to draw lines from:
a. Shoulder to Elbow
b. Shoulder to Hip
c. Hip to Knee
d. Knee to Ankle
e. Ankle to Toe
24. Use text tool to describe the following joint actions:
a. Shoulder

25. Fast forward the video until the subject reaches peak vertical height.
29. Export both videos as one Mediabook file and upload to Dartfish.tv. This Mediabook should
have both videos for this lab contained within it (chin up and vertical jump). To create a
mediabook, click on the “Mediabook” icon to the right of the storyboard on the storyboard tab.
Select “Cortland University TV” and select each of your mediabooks.
a. Label your media book with your name, lab time, and name of movement.
