Formative Assessment 1

The document contains 3 formative assessment questions: 1) Identifies uses of inductive and deductive reasoning. 2) Uses counterexamples to disprove 3 mathematical statements. 3) Solves 2 word problems using Polya's 4-step problem-solving method: understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and verify the solution.

Formative Assessment 1

I. Determine whether the following uses inductive (I) or deductive (D) reasoning.
1. I
2. I
3. D
4. D

II. Disprove the following statements using counterexample.

1. For x=1, we have (1+4)2 = 25 and 12+16 = 17. Since 25 and 17 is not equal, we
have found a counterexample. Thus, “For all numbers x, (x+4)2 = x2+16” is a false
statement.

2. Let x be 1 in the equation x2 > x. Since 1 squared is equal to one and is not greater
than itself, we have found a counterexample. Thus, “For all number x, x2 > x” is a
false statement.

3. For x= -7, we have √ (−7)2= -7 or 7=-7. Since it is inequal, we have found a

counterexample. Thus, “For all number x, √ x 2= x” is a false statement.

III. Solve using Polya’s four-step problem-solving strategies.

1. Understand the Problem:
In this particular problem, we let:
 x as the value of the original price
 n as the value of the money saved from the discount
 y as the value of the 1% of the original price

Device a Plan:
We can write find the original price of the purchased item using these formulae:
x - Php 1 500 = n, where,
1500
y=
60
x = y ● 100

Carry out the Plan:

1500
y=
60
= 2.5

x = 2.5 ● 100
= 2 500

n = x - 1 500
= 2 500 – 1 500
= 1 000

Verification:
By using the given formulae and values, we’ve identified that the amounts saved by
taking advantage of the sale is Php 1 000.

2. Understanding the problem:

The problem asks for the percentage of people that liked all three of the given
colors of light.

Device a Plan:
In this problem, we let:
 A - who liked white light
 B - who liked blue light
 C - who liked green light

The known variables in this problem are:

p(A) = 44% = 0.44
p(B) = 26% = 0.26
p(C) = 30% = 0.3

p(A∩C) = 8%
p(A∩B) = 12%
p(B∩ C) = 10%
p(AUBUC) = 84%

To find what is asked, we should use this formula to get what is asked:
p(AUBUC) = p(A) + p(B) + p(C) - p(A∩ C) - p(A∩ B) - p(B∩C) + p(A∩B∩C)

Carrying out the Plan:

84% = 44% + 26% + 30% - 8% - 12% - 10% + p(A∩B∩C)
84% = 70% + p(A∩B∩C)
p(A∩B∩C) = 84% - 70%
p(A∩B∩C) = 14%

Verification:
With the help of the given values and formula, we are able to attain the percentage
of people which liked all three, which is 14%.
