Chapter 2

Here is a draft letter for teachers on the first day of school focusing on the humanizing mission of teaching: Dear Teachers, Welcome to a new school year! I hope you all had a restful summer break. As we begin again with our students, I wanted to remind us of our core purpose and mission as educators. While academic achievement is important, our primary goal is to nurture each child's humanity. We aim to cultivate compassionate, thoughtful, and caring young people. Through our lessons and interactions, we should encourage qualities like empathy, kindness, courage, and service to others. Remember that behind every test score is a whole human being with their own experiences, strengths, and challenges.

Chapter 2: Lesson 2 - The Demands of the Society from the Teacher as a Person

Activity:

Recall your most memorable teacher who had the greatest impact in your life? What personal
qualities did he/she possess? Write them down

Applicaton:

1. Read this poem “you are a teacher” then answer the following questions.
YOU ARE A TEACHER

If I speak interestingly, effectively and well

But do not understand my students

I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I know all the methods and techniques of a teaching.

If I have complete my faith that they will work,

So that I used them completely,

But think only of materials or techniques, instead of how they can help my students,

If I count for nothing. If I go the second mile of my teaching, give up many activities,

But do it without understanding, It does no good.

Love is very patient, very kind;

Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs;

It is never tyrannic, never;

Yet does not insist on truth;

It does not become angry;

It is not resentful.

Love always expects the best of others;

It is gladdenen when they live up to these expectations, slow to loose faith when they do not.

It will bear anything,

Hope for anything, endure anything

This kind of love will never fail

If there are teaching methods, they will change;

If thee are curricula , they will revised.

For our knowledge is imperfect, and we are always looking for the better ways

Which an infinite God has placed ahead of us.

When I began to teach, I fumbled and failed;

Now I have put away some of my childish ways. At present I am learning bit by bit;

If I will keep on seeking, I shall at last understand;

As all along I myself have been understood;

So faith, hope, love endure.

These are the great three

But the greatest of them is love.

Which line of the poem do you like most? Why?

“For our knowledge is imperfect, and we are always looking for the better ways” I like this line because I
know in my self that I am not that intelligent and mastered all aspect and best strategies in teaching and
I am not really a genius in each lessons that I will teach, but because of my passion and goals to deliver
the lesson well for my students, I will do my best to understand and master it, I will find my own ways to
deliver my topic and my lesson well.

What mental portrait of the teacher in the classroom and the teacher in the community is painted by
the poem? “You are a teacher.”

There is no perfect teacher, we all failed and we face different challenges and problems in the field, but
this is our choice, we are a teacher, we have an oath not only to teach but to inspire the future
generations mold them into productive one, we must faced and conquer our fears and obstacles be we
got the noble profession, being a teacher.

2. Read your name through the poem like this: Brenda, You are a Teacher

ANGEL, YOU ARE A TEACHER

Angel speak interestingly, effectively and well

But Angel do not understand her students

Angel is noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

If Angel knows all the methods and techniques of a teaching.

If Angel have complete her faith that they will work,

So that Angel used them completely,

But think only of materials or techniques, instead of how they can help her students,

If Angel count for nothing. If Angel go the second mile of my teaching, give up many activities,

But do it without understanding, It does no good.

Love is very patient, very kind;

Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs;

It is never tyrannic, never;

Yet does not insist on truth;

It does not become angry;

It is not resentful.

Love always expects the best of others;

It is gladdenen when they live up to these expectations, slow to loose faith when they do not.

It will bear anything,

Hope for anything, endure anything

This kind of love will never fail

If there are teaching methods, they will change;

If thee are curricula , they will revised.

For our knowledge is imperfect, and we are always looking for the better ways

Which an infinite God has placed ahead of us.

When Angel began to teach, Angel fumbled and failed;

Now Angel have put away some of her childish ways. At present Angel's learning bit by bit;

If Angel will keep on seeking, Angel shall at last understand;

As all along she have been understood;

So faith, hope, love endure.

These are the great three

But the greatest of them is love.

3. How did you feel when you read your name through the lines of the poem? Describe and explain
why?

I feel that I am an imperfect teacher, I will fail and fall for many times but in each fall, I will rise and in
each rise I will learn and become the best version of myself and on my way to be a competent and good
teacher.

4. This how one describe professionalism

“You have to perform at a consistently higher level than others.

That’s the mark of true professional. Professionalism is nothing to do with getting paid with your
service.

State professionalism in sentence by stating one concrete act of professionalism.

Professionals will face a lot of struggles in their field of specialization but professionals are resilient and
flexible to conquer each obstacles along their way.

APPLICATON: Let’s Apply What We Learned

Reading, writing arithmetic are important only if they serve to make our children more humane

The Humanizing Mission of Teaching

1. Read this letter given by a private school to her teachers on the first day of a new school year. It
may make your humanizing mission in teaching crystal clear.

Dear Teacher.

I am g survivor of a concentration camp,

My eyes saw what no man should witness

- Gas chambers built by learned engineers

- Children poisoned by educated physicians

- Infants killed by grained nurses.

- Women and babies shot and burned by high and college graduates.

So I am suspicious of education

My request is: Help your students become human

Your efforts must never produce learned monsters,

Skilled psychopaths, and *Eichmanns,

Reading, writing, arithmetic are important only if

They serve to make our children more human.

Explain your mission as a professional teacher by helping children become more human.

Be a teacher. No matter what one’s profession, one might argue that all of us are teachers; that is, all of
us seek to engage others in something—carpentry, government, gardening, a product, the legal system,
chemistry, reading, communicating—where the “something” often represents our passion and the
subject of learning when we engage others. What’s our mission, then, as we engage or educate
someone about our passion? As a teacher, it begins by being student-centric in every decision that I
make to focus me on what is important to each student. This helps me focus my mission as a teacher, to:
Make sure students know I care about them; Help students learn (more) complex tasks and become
engaged learners; and Improve student performance. When we do this as teachers, we help children
and young people become satisfied with what they need to feel successful and to do so with friends. As
our focus centers on our students and building a relationship with them so that we can support and
engage them, we help them improve student performance. That’s what we do as educators when we
share our passion for learning.

2. Watch “Discovering Your Life’s True Calling- Lou Sabrina Ongkiko at YouTube. Based on the
video that you just watched, what is our life’s true calling? How can you apply that in your calling to
teach? Share your answers with the group.

I found my true calling, The real calling is not to teach but to love the children I always wanted to
become a something but destiny brought me to the world of teaching

Therefore as a future teacher just like Sabrina believes that every learner are excellent so do I. whatever
other people will say about this profession i know in myself that this is the noblest one and i believe of
this quote that "To believe is to see" to believe that the students have the ability to learn new
knowledge and see them the outcome. to become a dedicated and passionate teacher someday my
students will be the reason why I will teach.
