In this generation’s time, the world of media stepped up and played a much bigger role today than
before. Information about different topics especially about social issues became easier to be accessed
and share to other people, and also became a way to an efficient and effortless way of communicating.
Jobs and careers related to media emerged rapidly and non-electronic and electronic medium have
grown bigger. One of these mediums, the internet and social media have become widely accessed
nowadays and is constantly growing until now.

The internet and social media have become the mainstream medium in this day and made our lives
more convenient. It enables the users to submit, receive, compile, store, update, delete, and many other
functions of the data around the globe. Because of this, we can reach out to other people with just the
use of smartphones or computers, online businesses are rapidly emerging, online shopping has made
everyone’s shopping experience less tiring, people don’t need to queue in line because some
transactions can be done online, we can get the latest news and happenings that are happening today
through different online news portals, and many other features brought by the internet which made our
life more convenient than ever. But despite of these benefits brought by the internet, people could also
face dangers in using this.

Careless and irresponsible use of the internet can make people become more prone to the dangers
brought by the internet. First of all, due to the much easier distribution of information through media,
fake news or misleading information spread easily nowadays. Second, identity theft has become more
common today wherein finances or personal information are being stolen because of visiting to
unsecured sites and thoughtlessly giving away your personal information. Third, human and child
trafficking has also become a pressing issue in the world of internet, human or child traffickers are
everywhere on the internet and are victimizing careless people. Fourth, and the most common of all,
cyber-bullying or bullying and harassment by using electronic means becomes more rampant and less
controllable. Every second of the day, there is always a form of harassment happening in every social
media platforms.

In order to avoid these kind of threats and dangers, and be able to browse the internet without any
worries, it is important to do safety practices in using this platform. The safety of the users relies on how
responsible they are in using the internet. It is important to always fact-check news and information you
see on the internet. It is better if you are going to follow well-known and verified news portals. In
addition to this, keep your personal information professional and limited. Giving out personal
information to unknown sites or people is a big risk especially online. This also means that you should
practice safe browsing and keep your privacy settings on. Resist the urge to click if you see something
like a bait from unsecured websites. These kind of websites can collect your personal information which
may turn you into becoming a victim of identity theft. Moreover, people, especially minors should avoid
getting involved in online relationships especially to strangers or men usually older than them. Trusting
strangers easily on the internet may lead to unwanted dangers. Lastly, do not engage in cyberbullying.
When you witnessed a form of harassment or bullying on the internet or a certain social media platform,
do not hesitate to report it. Every social media platform provides a settings to report a post, tweet, or
status, so there is no excuse for you to ignore something like that.

Advancement in media and technology are consistently bringing us a lot of convenience and created a
huge impact on how we live our everyday lives. As a lot of tasks became easier to do, crimes and
dangers have become more rampant as well. The way we use the internet decides on how safe we are
from the potential dangers. So it is extremely important to do safety practices and be mindful on what
you share and click in this platform. Always remember, safety is always based on your responsibility.
