The Tabon Cave Complex in Palawan, Philippines contains over 200 caves that have yielded significant archaeological finds documenting human habitation from the Late Pleistocene to recent historic periods. American anthropologist Robert B. Fox discovered the first human remains in the Philippines, called Tabon Man, in the Tabon Caves in 1962. Within the complex, Manunggul Cave has produced a notable Neolithic burial jar from 890-710 BC, decorated with three faces, known as the Manunggul Jar.

THE TABON CAVE
ROBERT B. FOX Robert B. Fox
Tabon Man refers to remains discovered in the
Tabon Caves in Lipuun Point in Quezon, Palawan in the Philippines. They were discovered by Robert B. Fox, an American anthropologist of the National Museum of the Philippines, on May 28, 1962. Robert Fox was born on March 25, 1952 in England as Robert Michael John Fox. He is a producer, known for The Hours (2002), Notes on a Scandal (2006) and Iris (2001). He has been married to Fiona Golfar since August 27, 1996. They have two children. He was previously married to Natasha Richardson and Celestia Fox. But before anything else let’s watch a short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=i1Uqi_5_hiU&feature=share The Tabon Cave Complex and all of Lipuun Point is located on the west coast of Palawan. It is located on a limestone promontory which is visible from any direction for many kilometers and honeycombed with at least 200 caves and rockshelters. This point is called Lipuun by the local people but marked “Abion Head” on charts made from British surveys in 1851. These caves contained an astonishing wealth and an extensive time-range of cultural materials: a flake tool tradition which dates from the Late Pleistocene and early post-Pleistocene periods including a highly developed jar burial complex which appeared during the Late Neolithic and continued on to the developed Metal Age; and finally, porcelains and stoneware indicating local trade with China during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The some 200 caves located in the limestone formation are collectively known as the Tabon Caves, after the main cave, called Tabon, so named after a megapode bird that digs its nest into the ground. This was the site to first establish the presence of humans in the Philippines during the Pleistocene. THE MANUNGGUL CAVE Manunggul cave is one of the Cave in Tabon Cave Complex in Lipuun Point in Southern Palawan dating from 890-710 B.C
From this cave a secondary burial jar was
excavated called Manunggul Jar .
It was discovered by Victor Decalan , Hans Kasten
and other volunteer workers from the United States Peace Corps MANUNGGUL JAR - was one of the numerous jars found that believed to be a burial site - Manunggul jar is tan like color. It is largely made from clay and measures 51.5cm wide and 66. 5 cm high. The Manunggul jar featured three faces : the soul the boat driver And the boat itself This jar was a symbol of the National Museum's important role in spearheading the preservation of cultural heritage (pamana) using multi-disciplinary techniques.
The Manunggul jar served as a proof of our
common heritage with our common heritage with our Austronesian speaking ancestors despite the diversity of cultures of the Philippine People.
