Toilet Case Study

The document discusses the design of a public toilet located in a woodland in Shenzhen, China. The architect designed the toilet as four similar "leaf" units to avoid cutting down trees. Each leaf unit contains toilet stalls and amenities while allowing the toilet to be split across multiple small structures rather than one large building, preserving the trees. The design goal was to focus on avoiding the main root systems of trees with the building foundations.

INTRODUCTION
A BRIEF OVERVIEW
WHAT IS A PUBLIC TOILET
A GENERAL OVERVIEW
• A public toilet is a room or small building with toilets and sinks that does not
belong to a particular household. Rather, the toilet is available for use by the
general public. Public toilets are commonly separated into male and female
facilities, although some are unisex, especially for small or single-occupancy
public toilets.
• Increasingly, public toilets are accessible to people with disabilities. Public
toilets are known by many other names depending on the country.
Examples are: restroom, bathroom, men's room, women's room in the US,
washroom in Canada, and toilets, lavatories, water closet (W.C.), ladies and
gents in Europe. In some parts of the world, they are referred to as the loo.
• Some public toilets are free of charge while others charge a fee. In the latter
case they are also called pay toilets

ARCHITECT’S APPROACH
A GENERAL OVERVIEW
• The architect believed that the woods were
originally the owner of the place. They have set up
a series of protective umbrellas for the site, so he
decided not to cut them.
• After this determination the design goal was to
focus on how to avoid the main root system of all
the trees in the structural foundation.

THE FOUR LEAF APPROACH

• According to the building function, they split the THE FOUR LEAF UNITS
form into four similar small leaves units, that
consists of-
• 8 toilet seats for women
• 7 toilet seats for men
• an accessible toilets
• a baby care room
• a management room.
• The tip of the leaves is the entrance, and the wider
abdomen forms the toilet space.

ELEVATION

The new public toilet requires 8 toilet seats for women, 7 toilet seats for men, an accessible toilets, a
baby care room and a management room. If all these functions are contained in a single building, the
land area will cover more than 80 square meters, and some trees will be cut off, Hence the areas
have been divided into four separate blocks.

COLUMN FOUNDATION
Each unit is only equipped with two
columns, which are arranged on
the central axis of the interior to
ensure that the column foundation
keep away from the root; in this way,
the size of the foundation ring beam
which plays a stabilizing role can be
reduced,so that the scope of
foundation pit excavation can be
further reduced to protect the root
system

• Through the design of double-layer

cornice,it become an integrated roof, which
is completely separated from the enclosure
structure of metal curtain wall. This is a
"floating" roof

• The height of the building is limited to less than 3.2 meters

according to the location of the branch of the trunk.
• And the entry for the leaf structures is through the courtyard.
• The released structural space covered by the dense dark gray
metal veneer curtain wall accommodates the equipment
pipelines.
• These four small units back from the footpath and live under
the canopy of the forest.
• The four leafs, low and gentle slope roof redefines the space
under the woods, which we call them" leaf garden".
