Module 3 - Lesson 4 - Center of Mass and Center of Rigidity, and Review of Frame Analysis - CE 407-CE42S2 - Earthquake Engineering

This document discusses the center of mass and center of rigidity in structures. The center of mass is where the entire mass of the structure acts, and is contributed mainly by beams and slabs. The center of rigidity is where the overall stiffness of the structure acts, and is contributed mostly by shear walls and columns. It also reviews frame analysis, which involves calculating axial, shear, and bending forces on members, and transforming loads to local member axes for inclined members. General steps of determinate frame analysis are outlined. An example problem demonstrates calculating centers of mass and rigidity for a given structure, and finding reactions and internal forces in a sample frame.

Module 3: Lesson 4 - Center of Mass

and Center of Rigidity, and Review of
Frame Analysis

CENTER OF MASS AND CENTER OF RIGIDITY

Center of Mass – is the location in the structure where the mass of
the whole structure is acting upon. Mass is primarily composed by
beams and slabs.

Center of Rigidity – location in the structure where the entire

stiffness of the building acts. Mostly contributed by shear walls and
columns.

FRAME ANALYSIS
Structural frames are more complicated than beams because
none of them simply lie along a linear fashion like beams. There
may be vertical members, as well as members inclined at an angle.
Frame Analysis includes the computation of Axial, Shear, and

Bending moments of the structure. For members that are inclined

at an angle, analyze them by first transforming all the loads on the
member into the direction of the local member axis (perpendicular
and parallel to the inclined member) is often the most practical.

ANALYZING DETERMINATE FRAMES:

Determinate frames are very similar to the analysis of

determinate beams, except that you need to divide the frame into
separate components (which are analyzed as individual beams). In
addition, there is also the added complexity of inclined members
and the incorporation of axial forces in the analysis, which we
originally disregarded when analyzing beams.

General Steps in analyzing determinate frames:

1. Use equations of equilibrium to determine all reaction forces.

2. Split the frames into separate members.
*NOTE: When splitting up, any point load or moment that acts
directly on a joint between two or more members, it must be placed
on only ONE of the members. It does not matter which member
receives the point load, so long as it is on one.
3. Find all the forces at each member's ends using equations of
equilibrium on a member's free body diagram on its own.
4. Solve all loads on the member of the local member axis.

5. Now you can get the axial moment, shear force and bending
moment diagrams by solving each member as if it were a beam
