Describing Types of Technical Problems Speaking

The document discusses the technical challenges of endurance car racing like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It describes how engineers must build cars that can last 24 hours racing at high speeds while withstanding various technical problems. The key challenges include building engines that can run efficiently for 24 hours without overheating, changing wheels and tires during the race, and repairing parts as needed over the long duration of the competition. The document then provides a sample talk from a racing engineer discussing the main "engineering enemies" that can cause failures, such as heat, pressure, vibration, shocks, and abrasion, and which car parts are most vulnerable to each type of problem.

DESCRIBING TYPES OF TECHNICAL PROBLEMS

SPEAKING

In pairs, discuss the technical challenges of endurance car races like the Le Mans24 Hours sport car race.

Key words - Improve the cars engines (to be able to last 24 hours)
race - Many parts need to be repaired during the 24-hour race
speed
- change wheels and tyres during the competition
endurance racing
competition - cars have to ride as many laps as possible so they need to have efficient motors
team allowing to run fast
car components:
engine, brake, tyre
engineering

LISTENING 1 Sabino, an engineer with a sports car racing team, is giving a talk to some of his team’s
sponsors at a test session. (5.1)

1. Listen to the talk and answer the following questions.

a. What saying emphasizes the importance of reliability? “To finish first, first you must finish”
b. What expression refers to things that can cause failures? “engineering enemies”
c. What expression describes damage caused by normal use? “wear and tear”

2. In the talk, Sabino names five things that can cause failures. Try to find the words corresponding to
the definitions. Then, listen again and check your answers.

a. HEAT = high temperatures

b. PRESSURE = loads from expending gases or liquids
c. VIBRATION = continuous high-frequency movement or shacking
d. SHOCKS = sudden impacts
e. ABRASION = damage to surfaces caused by friction

3. In pairs, suggest which engineering enemies (in exercise 2b) can be the most problematic for each of
the following car parts.
1. Chassis: SHOCK 2. Engine: HEAT 3. gearbox and clutch: ABRASION
4. suspension: VIBRATION, SHOCK 5. brakes: ABRASION 6. tyres: ABRASION

7. wings: SHOCKS 8. cooling system: PRESSURE 9. nuts and bolt: VIBRATION
