University of Melbourne BMEN30005 Introduction To Biomechanics SEMESTER 1 - 2020 Tutorial 1 - Simple Kinematics Problem 1

This document contains 4 problems from an Introduction to Biomechanics tutorial about simple kinematics. The problems involve determining velocity, acceleration, and angular velocity of points and links on a person walking with pendulum gait and a four-bar linkage. The problems are drawn from the textbook Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics 4th Edition by Meriam and Kraige.

TUTORIAL 1 – SIMPLE KINEMATICS

Problem 1
Consider a person walking with pendulum gait. Their leg rotates about an axis Point O, the hip joint.
At the time point represented the angular velocity is 𝜔 = 4 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 and the angular acceleration is
𝛼 = 11 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 2 .
a) Determine the velocity and acceleration of Point A.
b) Determine the velocity and acceleration of Point B.

Problem 2
Again consider the person with pendulum gait. Now the origin O translates by 30cm at a
velocity of 0.1m/s. Determine the average angular velocity of the leg during this time
interval.

Problem 3 (M&K)

In the four-bar linkage shown, control link OA has a counter-clockwise angular velocity
0 = 10 rad/s during a short interval of motion. When link CB passes the vertical position
shown, point A has coordinates x = −60 mm, y = 80 mm . By means of vector algebra,
determine the angular velocity of AB and BC.

Problem 4 (M&K)

In the four-bar linkage from the previous question, and using the results of the previous
question, if OA has constant counter-clockwise angular velocity 0 = 10 rad/s , calculate the

angular acceleration of links AB and BC for the position where the coordinates of A are
x = −60 mm, y = 80 mm and link BC is vertical.
