60-W-3010-01A Shift control unit, function

1. Function of shift lever lock

The shift lever lock installed between the shift lever unit (2) and
the bottom section of the housing holds the gearshift lever in
position when it is not being actuated.
This is necessary because the fluid in the system expands and
contracts due to the temperature fluctuations to which the vehicle
is exposed.
In the event of a pressure drop due to leakage in the hydraulic
circuit, the shift lever locks (2.2 and 2.3) assume a safety function.
The shift lever locks are not intended to give the driver the
impression that the gears are engaged. This is determined by the
transmission alone.
The shift lever locks are necessary because of the dead weight of
the gearshift lever and because of pressure variations due to the
temperature rise before the pressure relief valves open
(approx. 2 bar).

2. Pressure buildup function

The shift lever unit installed in the shift control unit transmits the movements of the gearshift
lever via piston rods to the corresponding pistons (A to D) in the bottom section of the
housing. Starting from the neutral position of the gearshift lever, the pistons generate a
hydraulic pressure. Each movement direction of the gearshift lever requires its own
dedicated hydraulic circuit.
The piston (C) transmits forces and movements in the "odd gears" direction when the
gearshift lever is moved towards the front. The piston (A) transmits forces and movements in
the "even gears" direction when the gearshift lever is moved towards the rear.
In the same way the piston (B) in the shift control unit acts when shifting in the "lower gears"
direction, and the piston (D) acts when shifting in the "higher gears" direction.

3. Function of cup seal assemblies

The secondary cup seals (6.1) and the O-ring (6.2) in the
secondary cup seal assembly (6) seal the piston (3) against the
shift control unit on the outside. The additional bores (arrow A) on
the seal housing of the secondary cup seal assembly (6) are
required for equalizing the fluid volumes during self-centering or
for bleeding the hydraulic circuit.

The seal housing of the primary cup seal assembly (7) features
additional bores (arrow B) for replenishing the hydraulic circuit.
The lip of the primary cup seal (7.1) opens at a vacuum of 0.3
bar. In this state the hydraulic fluid is able to flow from the internal
supply chamber into the hydraulic circuit. This vacuum may be
caused by fluid variations (temperature changes) during self-
centering and by internal or external leakage in the system.
An O-ring (7.2) seals the primary cup seal assembly (7) on the
outside.

4. Pressure compensation function in hydraulic circuits
The pressure relief valves (15, 16) guarantee the pressure
equalization between the two associated cylinders and prevent a
gear from being engaged unintentionally. The shift control unit is
equipped with two double-acting pressure relief valves. The
pressure relief valve (15) is responsible for the gear hydraulic
circuit and the pressure relief valve (16) for the gate hydraulic
circuit.
These pressure relief valves regulate the fluid expansion.
The pressure relief valves do not open when the driver actuates
the shift control unit via the gearshift lever.
They open only when the system is not in operation.
At pressures up to approx. 2 bar the pressure relief valve remains
closed.
The pressure relief valve opens the hydraulic circuit at a higher
pressure 2 bar (pressure of 2 bar required in both hydraulic
circuits), e.g. when the temperature rises. The valve is opened by
movement of the valve elements (16.1) in the pressure relief
valve.

If the pressure rise is even greater, the balls (16.2) in the valve 6. Shift function
elements (16.1) are pressed against the plunger (16.3). Both valve elements (16.1) move to the center stop. The balls
At this moment the balls (16.2) lift off their valve seats and the (16.2) follow this movement. The ball (16.2) on which the higher
pressure is dissipated via the plunger (16.3) and the openings in pressure is acting pushes the opposite ball off the valve seat via
the pressure relief valve. the plunger (16.3). This allows the surplus volume to drain off.

must be significantly higher), e.g. when changing gear.

5. Volume equalization function in case of fluid expansion
The middle spring in the pressure relief valve is compressed. The
balls (16.2) follow this movement. The valve element (16.1), which
is under the greater pressure, moves further to the center of the
pressure relief valve. The pressure on the springs on the ball is
thus relieved and the springs open the valve seat. This process
continues until the pressures in both hydraulic circuits are equal.

7. Volume equalization function between supply chamber and

expansion reservoir
The vent and breather pipe (11) ensures that the volumes are
equalized between the internal supply chamber (14.1) and the
external expansion reservoir (18), e.g. when bleeding the system
of if there is a leak in the hydraulic circuit.
The fluid quantity required for operation is stored partly in the
internal supply chamber (14.1) of the shift control unit housing
(14), but mostly in the expansion reservoir (18) installed on the
shift control unit. The additional expansion reservoir (18) is
mounted directly on the shift control unit. As the expansion
reservoir is mounted lower than the internal supply chamber
(14.1) in the shift control unit, a physical effect equalizes the fluid
levels between the expansion reservoir and the supply chamber.
W26.60-1062-10
The expansion reservoir is bled via a ventilation line (21) plugged
into the expansion reservoir. The other end of this ventilation line
(21) is located on the cab behind the front flap.
