National Institute of Fashion Technology, Jodhpur: Fashion Material Management and Quality Control Assignment - 1

This document provides information about corn fiber as a sustainable textile material. It discusses that corn fiber is derived from corn through a process of harvesting, sugar extraction through fermentation, polymerization into poly lactic acid, and spinning into fibers. The physical properties described include density, tensile strength, elongation and flexibility. Chemically, corn fibers have properties such as a melting point below 140°C, solubility in certain solvents, and resistance to UV radiation. In conclusion, corn fiber is presented as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics with controllable properties.

Corn Fibre
Introduction

´ Corn fiber is a new innovation in the textile industry.

´ It is a manmade fiber derived from renewable resources.
´ It has the advantages of synthetic materials and various
properties of natural products such as cotton and wool.
´ Corn fibers have emerged as an eco-friendly substitute for
synthetic fabrics.
´ Fibers are being used for making not just clothes, but also in
geotextiles and home textiles.
´ The fabric made from corn fiber is easy to care for, cheap and
very comfortable to wear and is stain-resistant and UV
resistant.
Structure of Corn Kernel
Composition of Corn
The Mature Corn is composed of 4 parts:
• Endosperm - 82%
• Germ – 15%
• Pericarp – 5%
• Tip Cap – 1%

Component’s in the Composition of Corn

• Starch – 61%
• Corn Oil – 3.8%
• Proteins – 8.0%
• Fiber – 11.2%
• Moisture – 16.0%
Production and Processing of Corn to Textile Fibers
Production And Processes Of Corn to Textile
Fibers:
Harvesting Around 3 months the corn is harvested and is
of Corn forwarded for further processes.

Getting Corn Syrup(glucose) was produced by combining

Sugar From corn starch with dilute HCl and then heating the
mixture under high pressure.
Corn

Fermentation From fermentation process(chemical breakdown)

glucose is converted into monomers known as
of Glucose Polydioxanone(PDO).

Turning PDO is shipped to polymer plant where it is

polymerized to form Poly Lactic Acid(PLA). They
Monomer come out into long strands and are chopped into
into Polymer pellets(small, rounded and compressed form)

Fibers and The pellets are shipped to a textile plant where they
Fabrics are are converted into fibers. The fibers go into apparel
or carpets.
