TUTORIAL NOTES

Tutorial 2:

Lest:
- It is important that you identify LEST into each drill and all of the activities
- How did he transition from one activity to the other
- Group sizes, space of area that was being used, the type of equipment that
was being used

Rink:
- Rink level 1

Warm Up (Snow ball tag):

- Students were to pick a partner and label themselves 1 or 2
- Those students were split off into two groups (2 separate squares)
- Each square was previously set out and with bean bags at each
- 1st drill was for the people with the bean bags to tag students below hips
- 2nd drill was to each collect a ball and there were different variations of
throwing and catching the ball, these being:
o Clapping 5 times, 10 times etc
o Doing a 360 then catching it
o Clapping and 360
o Catching under the leg
o Catching behind the back
o Catching behind the back and under leg

Image created by
Sportsplan (2021)

1st drill:
- Students were to go with their partner and to each stand along the line
opposite each other (lines were already set out)
- Under arm throw was practiced, students were told the 5 steps, these
including;
o Step
o Throw
o Track
o Catch
o Give
- Variations of the underarm were done
o Step
o Throw
o Track
o Catch
o Give
- Variations underarm throw, rolling on the floor if they can’t track it
o This was to cater for students who cannot catch

2nd drill:
- Students were to stay in those same partners and on the same line
- However now focusing on over arm throw instead
- Same 5 steps although changing slightly
o Step
o Back (bring back arm)
o Release
o Track
o Catch
o Give
- Variations stepping backwards to increase the length of the throw
- Stepping forwards was to decrease length
- Clapping was enforced when catching the ball

3rd drill:
- Students were to stay in those same partners and on the same line
- However, students moved the cones in
- Within those partners they were not in a group of 4 (person next to them, split
into 2 diagonal)
- Variations were to throw and catch the ball but trying to hit the cone
- Points were:
o 1 point = hit cone
o 2 points = knock over the cone

RINK:
1 and 2 were used
- 1 was used for beginners (this was how to complete the skill, using the KTP’s,
the decision making was to release the ball or not, students were to figure this
one out for themselves.
- 2 was used when adding variations (cone to throw at and the decision was
how to throw the ball. The example used was ‘Josh’ wanted to hit the target,
weather he was going for 1 point or 2 point (underarm or over arm).
End game/drill:
- Students were to make a team of 6 to practice their bowling skills
- Each group was to design a drill that included RINK in it
- Students were to consider LEST when planning their drill as well
- My group came up with a game where:
o 2 teams versing each other, having 3 bowls each, there was a point
system used which related back to cricket (2, 4, 6,)
o 2 points = hit the wicket
o 4 points = through the wicket or bounced in the hoop
o 6 points if you both wicket and hoop
- Students were told to link points system back to cricket
- And were told to ensure each student was engaged in the drill

Tutorial 3:

Hitting off the Tee:

Instructions - The batter is to hit the ball off the tee towards the
various fielders. Cones are out there for the fielders
to stand on/ be near.
- Fielders are to stop the ball and hold onto it until the
batter has hit all 3 balls. This is for safety. Balls are
then thrown back to the wicket keeper who then
rotates through and swaps places with the batter.
The two fielders remain where they are until both two
students have had a turn at batting.
- They both then rotate through.
Variations The extension:
and - Batters can choose to use one hand only
Extensions - Fielders throw the ball back to the tee to just add in
throwing, catching and fielding skills.
- Fielders can also be made static and it can be a more
controlled game, the batters then also have to aim.
LEST L – Groups of 4 however a group of 5 can be used as well
E – 1 bat, 3 balls, 1 batting tee and 4 cones for each group
S – The area should be set out in a circle formation facing
outwards with 8 stations (32 students)
T – 10 minutes, depending on how well each group are
going, if they are engaged or not. Each student must have a
go at each rotation.
RINK This activity is Level 1 and 2. The students are in control
however they can now make a decision on where to hit the
ball.
KTP’s Batting – Step, Stop, Swing
Fielding – Get low, cup both hands, fingers should brush on
the grass, eyes should be on the ball

Teaching It is vital that you ensure each group sets up their station
notes outwards in a circle. This prevents from the balls going
everywhere and causing injuries.
Transition Each group is to stay however the cones can be moved to
make it harder or by adding in extra cones to increase the
distance.

Continuous cricket

Bowler:
• The ball is to be bowled underarm from the coned marker
• The bowler can bowl whenever the ball is ready, you do not have to wait for
the batter to come back.

Batters:
• The batter must attempt to try and hit the ball after it has bounced once, if
successful, they MUST run to the other wicket on the side
• Batters are out fi they caught out or bowled out
• Once the batter is out, a new batter comes in straight away
• Once everyone has betted the two teams swap over

Fielders:
• Their job is to return the ball to bowler as fast as possible to the next over

Scoring:
• One run is scored for each run between the wickets and the cones
• Whatever team with the most amount of runs at the very end, wins the game.

Instructions - The batter is to hit the ball off the tee towards the various
fielders. Cones are out there for the fielders to stand on/ be
near.
- Fielders are to stop the ball and hold onto it until the batter
has hit all 3 balls. This is for safety. Balls are then thrown
back to the wicket keeper who then rotates through and
swaps places with the batter. The two fielders remain where
they are until both two students have had a turn at batting.
- They both then rotate through.
Variations Variations:
and Progression:
Extensions • add a run out add an extra batter
• Bowlers can bowl over arm batters can hit off a tee

Regression:
• change retirement score

LEST L - teams should be evenly divided. large classes can have games
on at once
E - 1 ball, 2 stumps, 4 cones one colour, 2 cones a different colour
(zone), 1 bat, set of wicket gloves.
S - dependent on the class, closer for younger groups, larger pitch
for elite players.- if 2 games are running, set them up back to back
so balls are being hit either way
T - 15-20 minutes, multiple innings.

RINK This activity is Level 1 and 2. The students are in control however
they can now make a decision on where to hit the ball.
KTP’s Stage 4 - offensive and defensive strategies are involved, dismal,
scoring, very game like situation

Teaching Batting
notes • Step, stop, swing
Fielding
• Get low, cup hands, fingers brush grass, eyes on ball
Bowling
• “step, reach, roll, release

Transition Each group is to stay however the cones can be moved to make it
harder or by adding in extra cones to increase the distance.

Instructions 1. batting team is lined up behind hitting line while one batter is
in the play
2. Fielding team stands in filed inside the area
3. Batter hits all 6 balls off the cones towards the fielders
4. Once the balls have all been hit the batman’s must run
around the cone and back
5. Whist they are running the fielders are to place the balls
back on the hitting cones before the fielding team gets back
to the cone

LEST L- Students split into 2 even teams where possible. large classes
will have 2 games going at once
E - 2 sets of wickets, 6 balls, 6 cricket tees, 2 bats, 2 cones
S - closer for younger groups, push it out for elite boys
T - 15-20 min, make sure everyone gets at least 1-2 bats.

RINK Stage 3 - offensive and defensive strategies are involved, several

complex skills involved

KTP’s Batting:
• Step, stop, swing
Fielding:
• Get low, cup hands, fingers brush grass, eyes on the bal

Teaching Batting
