Relevance of Learning History of Mathematics

This document discusses the relevance of learning the history of mathematics. It argues that history provides context for understanding the present by showing how ideas developed over time. The document notes that mathematics reflects the development of civilization, with counting and measurement systems evolving from basic human needs. Learning history encourages flexible thinking, helps analyze concepts, and reveals how mathematics has contributed to human progress. It suggests teaching mathematical topics by linking them to their historical development makes learning more engaging and interesting for students.

RELEVANCE OF

LEARNING HISTORY
OF MATHEMATICS

PRESENTED BY : ANJALI PRAKASH

HISTORY IS A MEANINGFUL RECORD
OF HUMAN ACHIEVEMENTS . It is not
merely a list of chronological events but a
truthful integrated account of the
HISTORY relationship between person , events ,
times and places .We use history to
understand the past and to try to
understand the present in the light of
past events and developments.
“MATHEMATICS IS THE MIRROR OF CIVILIZATION ”.
There is no exaggeration in this saying because history
of mathematics is the history of civilization .The
historical background of the development sequence of
mathematics has been found in the studies and
MATHEMATICS researches of tribal languages and extinct language
related to them . The studies reveal that the simplest
process of counting might have developed in several
stages to its present systematic level .It has been a
progressive science and has lead to the development of
various subjects vocations and technology.
IT HELPS STUDENTS DEVELOP A DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATHEMATICS THEY
HAVE ALREADY STUDIED BY SEEING HOW IT
WAS DEVELOPED OVER TIME…

HELP US TO HAVE REASONS TO ENCOURAGES CREATIVE AND

FLEXIBLE THINKING ….
ANALYTIC STUDY THE
THINKING,QUICKENS PERFECTLY VALID WAY TO
OUR MIND , GENERATES HISTORY OF VIEW CONCEPTS AND TO
PRACTICALITY… MATHEMATICS CARRY OUT COMPUTATION…..

ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONTINUE STUDYING

THE SUJECT..
CREATE INTEREST IN MATHEMATICS..
 Mathematics can be presented as a dynamic &progressive
subject , relevant to human development.
 It will be instructive and interesting ,it will remind us of a
glorious past and also teach us how to increase our store
knowledge.
IMPORTANCE  Warns the learner against making hasty conclusion.
OF THE  Many mathematics topics can be better introduced in the class
HISTORY OF by linking them with their development.
MATHEMATICS  It can reveal the contribution of mathematics to the history of
human civilization .Mathematics and physical researches have
reliable record of intellectual progress .It is one among the
large windows through which the philosophic eye looks into
the past ages and traces the line of intellectual and cultural
development.
• Reveals that at every stage , major or significant development of
mathematics was conditioned by human needs.
• Most terms ,concept and conventions can be properly understood only
with reference to their historical background.
• If the teacher reveals the knowledge of the history of mathematics to the
learners , they will form a good impression about the teachers scholarship .
this help him to command respect
• Gradation of the content of mathematics , correlation of the subject with
other areas of knowledge and psychological and logical order of the subject
matter-all these can be maintained with the help of history.
• Mathematics is a man made science . it will thus encourage the learner
to contribute to its development.
• All branches of mathematics is developed in relation with one another .
so it guards the learner against compartmentalization.
• Some related stories and events , narrated occasionally ,can diminish
the monotony of the classroom work.
• It gives the impression that mathematics has an intimate connection
with other branches of knowledge and hence it should not be treated as
an isolated subject.
•It make the students appreciate the progress of man
over the stages . They would like to read and hear how
the old mathematician discovered mathematical facts
and tried out their experiments.
•Interesting anecdoyes chosen from the history of
mathematical development can make learning
interesting.
From the time of origin of human life could
A GENERAL sense certain ideas related to mathematics .It
REVIEW OF THE was explained there that it was from the
HISTORY OF regular shapes of object , the rhythm in the
arrangement of many natural phenomena and
MATHEMATICS the systematic rotation of the planet , ..That
FROM THE TIME man began feeling a sense of mathematical
OF ORGINE OF institution . it was also pointed out that he
HUMAN LIFE derived many ways of action to meet the
issues raised by practical life.
 WHEN MAN FACED THE PROBLEM OF COMPAIRING LENGTH HE USED HIS ORGANS FOR
THE PURPOSE AS INDICATED BY HIS USING THE WIDTH OF 2 FINGURES [inch] LATER THE
LENGTH OF A FOOT ..ETC FOR THE PURPOSE STANDARDISATION OF THE UNITS FOR
LINEAR MEASUREMENT DEVELOPED ONLY LATER BECAUSE F PROBLEMS THAT SEMAND
ACCURATE MEASUREMENT . STANDARDISATION OF THE UNITS OF LENGTH
ACCORDINGM TO THE METRIC SYSTEM WITH 10 AS THE BASIS OF DEMARCATIONWAS A
MUCH SYSTEMATIC , NOW BEING FOLLOWED BY MOST PART OF THE WORLFD. During
early stages , people did not know ever to count and there were no number names. That is
why one to one correspondence was developed as a techniques for comparison of the
number of the members of a group ,gradually they place stones etc .To get the idea of
numbers in the latter group than in the first . Then they started using all the fingers of
both hands and then ten fingers of the feet together for compairing numbers using the
principle of one-to-one correspondence.
Thus arrive to develop the skill for counting and comparison in
terms of numbers how they created numbers names , how they
arrived at standardised units of measurement of length ,areas ,
volumes , weights etc to solve issues relating to day to day
needs associated with various phenomena are evidence for his
intelligent way of thinking and reasoning . The idea of 2d
measures was developed and based upon the linear units 2d
units were gradually conceived . that is how sq cm, sq m etc
came to be used for the purpose.
In short knowledge of the history of
mathematics can be used by an
intelligent teacher to introduce topics
in an interesting manner.
