Module 4 - QSM Activity

The Fine Family Motels chain was experiencing a decline in occupancy rates down to 58%. While most locations had acceptable occupancy, a few low-performing properties were dragging down the overall rate. However, these problem properties seemed to shift monthly, so the company had difficulty promptly notifying reservation agents and distributors about discount offers. To address this, the company is considering technological changes to more easily identify locations with low occupancy rates and structural changes to make necessary notifications.

FINE FAMILY MOTELS

The reservation agents at the 105 units of Fine Family Motels chain worked hard, but the chain’s occupancy rate
seemed to keep drifting lower. When the rate hit 58%, management realized that something had to be done.

While most locations had an acceptable occupancy rate, a few low occupancy locations pulled down the overall rate.
Unfortunately, the low-occupancy properties seemed to shift around from month to month. The local reservation
agents, and airline reservation networks weren’t notified of the low occupancy areas until the problem became acute.
The company was willing to offer discounts of up to 50% in the low-occupancy properties to fill rooms, if it could
identify them promptly and get the information out to tour organizations, online distributors, travel wholesalers, and
other client sources.

1. What technological changes would benefit Fine Family Motels?

2. What structural Changes might they make necessary?
3. How might Family Motes use the World Wide Web to improves its occupancy rate?
