This document summarizes a student's school-based assessment project on whether a netball player's height affects their chances of scoring. The student investigated this topic through questionnaires distributed to classmates, observing a netball match, and secondary research. The results showed that most watched netball occasionally and enjoyed shooting/scoring the most. The average height of netball players was found to be between 4-5 feet, with the shortest players being between 4-5 feet as well. Finally, 64% of respondents felt that a player's height does affect their chances of scoring in netball.

INTRODUCTION
Netball is most popular in many commonwealth nations specifically in certain
schools. It is a ball sports played by two teams of seven players. This topic
was chosen by researcher because from watching multiple netball matches it
teaches him as a child valuable social and communication skills as the player
co-operate to achieve a common goal. Height matters in a netball game
because being tall you’re at an advantage of getting to score the bucket over
your opponent better and easier, the cower your skill level, more reliant on
height you can be in a change of direction in a netball match a player that is
shorter can move faster and easily. This two months long project to

6
investigate if the height matters in netball were gather and the researcher
realized that height does matter.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First and fore most the researcher thanks GOD for His never-ending grace,
mercy, and provision during this Mathematics school-based assessment. The
researcher acknowledges his parents for giving him a break from chores and
proving financial needs to complete the school-based assessment. Thanks also
to the community for answering the questionnaires, finally thanks to the
subject teacher for the guide through the work.

7
Method of data collection
Two method of data collection were used to obtain for this School Based
Assessment Primary and Secondary data collection.

Primary Data Collection is firsthand information obtained by gathering data

through survey interviews or experiments. The primary method was used by
questionnaires and observation. Twenty-five questionnaires which contained
fifteen questions were distributed to the students of new silver city secondary
school. After the questionnaires were distributed, the researcher waited on the
questionnaires.

8
Secondary Data Collection is data collected by someone other than the user,
census information collected by observing live netball match for this School
Based Assessment. The secondary data collection used was to have talks with
Netball coaches and players as well as the observation of a live game. The
researcher then used the secondary method of data collection which included
the internet and textbooks to obtain information to analyze the data. The data
was collected on the 31 January, 2021 between the hours of 3:54 pm to
5:00pm on the day after it was distributed. Data were collected from the
students of new silver city secondary school.

Game Observation

In 2018 commonwealth game two teams were on the floor England vs.
Australia on September 23rd. These teams played two consecutive games
England won all two games. From watching these games some players were
highlighted for their performance and height. Four players on England and
four on Australia were highlighted for these two matches. England’s top (4)
players of these matches were 5ft Kaleen Corbin, 5ft Jodie Gibson, 5ft Amy
Carter and 6ft Eleanor Cardwell. In different field these players excelled, an
average height of a netball players should be 6ft, but as recorded England has
a lot of short players. Australia top girls were 6ft Caitlin basset, 6ft page
hardly, 7ft Sarah Waa and 6ft Liz Watson these players were recorded
because there defensive and scoring skills were unlimited. For netball the
team awarded 4 points for a win.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF
DATA
It was the aim of the researcher to thoroughly investigate if the height of a
shooter affects the percentage of the number of shots scored in a netball
match, below are the data that was collected with the use of questionnaires,
fully analyzed and interpreted.

 It can be seen on table 1 the number of researchers who often watches

netball matches in which a percentage of 84% followed by 21 viewers
engage in the act of viewing the matches while 16% followed by 4
participants never viewed the match of netball.

 In table 2 it is illustrating the favorite act displayed in a netball

match.8 participants chose Shooting with 32%. 6 participants chose
scoring with 24%. 5 participants chose ball control with 20%. 2
participants chose handling with 8%, while 4 participants chose game
roll with 16% displayed on a line graph.

 table 3 showing average height of the netball players. To the table it

can be seen that the lowest response is a frequency of 4 which is 2-3ft,
with a percentage of 16%, the two second least is 7-8ft and 6-7ft with
a frequency of both being 6 and a percentage of 24%, the most has na
frequency with a total of 9 and a percentage of 36%.

 In table 4 shows the shortest documented height of netball players.

According to the, the results collected the shortest person was recorded
to be 2-3ft with a total frequency of 4 and a percentage of 16%. The
players that were 5-6ft and 7-8ft, came in second with the frequency of
7 and 8, percentages 24% and 28%. The player with the highest
scored 8 shots with a percentage of 32%.

21
 It can be clearly be seen that on table five with the questioned that was
being asked,” if the height of a player affects the chances of scoring?”
16 of the respondents which was 64% of the responded no, while 9 of
them which were 36% responded yes.

 According to frequency table 6 the information showing

recommendation for shorter players to excel in the game was a better
ball being 20% with the frequency of 5, a better shoe being 52% with
the frequency of 13, and enhance of game being 28% with a frequency
of 7.

 According to frequency table and figure 7, which showed if longer

legs equate to shorter running distance in netball.56% with a frequency
of 14 of the respondents said yes, while 44% with a frequency of 11
responded no.

 According to table 8 which illustrated “how shorter players can

enhance his/her shooting skills if below 5ft.” It was observed 40 %
with a frequency of 10 responded change his/her angle of shooting,
20% with a frequency of 5 responded change his/her shooting
formation, while 16% with a frequency of 4 responded move to close
to the ring to shoot better and lastly, 24% with a frequency of 6
responded enhance his/her triceps strength.

 It was overserved that on frequency table 9, which showed the

percentage of the world’s athlete that played netball. Recorded 8%
being 2 athletes, 16% being 4 frequency, 24% being 6, 12% being 3
and 40% being 10.

 According to the information obtained from the frequency table 10,

which shows skills required to play netball. It was recorded that,
hitting and shooting recorded 44% with a frequency of 11, chest past
and shooting 28% with a frequency of 7, heading and dribbling
recorded 16% with a frequency of 4 and jumping and chest pasting and
shooting recorded 12% with a frequency of 3.

22
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

23
Limitation
Time- the researcher took a very long time to get the questionnaires to type
out, because the researcher laptop wasn’t working at the time. Then a lot of
work was push back because the researcher wasn’t getting in contact with
resource personnel to examine their piece of work each time, they do an
additional part of this School Based Assessment SBA.

Finance- this was one of the researcher’s major issues towards completing this
School Based Assessment. The researcher had to wait to acquire the finance
needed to print twenty-five (25) questionnaires.

24
Conclusion

It can be concluded, with supporting facts from the respondents that

most persons participated in netball games. Since netball was a
popular game and most people learnt to cooperate and work as a team,
it was clearly seen as a popular sport most respondents viewed netball
game. Based on the responses from the participants in the survey
frequently the game was a favorite among individuals. It was fun
viewing this sport. It was clearly seen that shooting was the most
favored thing in a netball game, since players would have a better
chance of being successful during the game. According to responses
seen on the Talley chart an outstanding number of persons surveyed
thought that the average height of a player is 6-7ft. According to data
collected that were analyzed, 4-5ft and 5-6ft was the documented

25
height of netball player, illustrating that most people recommended
better ball for shorter player to excel in the sport. More than half of the
respondents stated that it is better to be close to the ring to shoot
accurately if someone shooting skill is below 5ft.Finally; some persons
surveyed stated that 30% was the average percentage of points scored
in a netball match by a single shooter on the 3rd yard position. In
conclusion, one can say that the height of a player or players do affect
the percentage of goal score in the game of netball.
