INTRODUCTION
“Do not be fooled by the silence out there, weary traveler, nor almost certain oblivion. Will you, weary traveler, be

horizon of a great and grassy plain, Rhenge is a world what remains of civilization, or will you, like so
beautiful in all the ways it can kill you.” many others, fall to the beasts, the machines, and

the dark. No, Rhenge is for those with grit, with
spirit, with the unrelenting will to survive even in Riley Passmore,
the face of impossible odds. Black Marble Games
Started in the summer of 2018, Rhenge grew out Fall 2020
of a desire to challenge even the most basic tenets
of the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game. More
than anything else, I wanted a world without the
sprawling kingdoms of European fantasy, a world

e
without heroic adventurers but common folks just
trying to get by. I wanted a world of marble instead
of cobblestone, a world of spirits instead of gods,
a world home to ancient, otherworldly technology,
pl
powerful machines, and a fallen civilization.
After more than two years of development and
150 plus pages, I am proud to say that Rhenge has
delivered on that promise. There are no kingdoms
here, nor are there any kings or queens. There are
no noble bloodlines, no warring houses – not even
city states. Instead, Rhenge is a world of desperate,
m

isolated communities, a world that has to fight and

scavenge in order to stay alive. Here, the biggest
threat isn’t each other – it’s nature itself.
Millennia ago, the world of Rhenge survived an
extinction-level event known as the Age of Lust. A
war between the spirits of nature and the gods of
Sa

civilization, it nearly destroyed all life in Rhenge,

and ever since, its peoples have lived on the brink.
Starvation is rampant, and so is disease. The war
machines of a fallen superpower still wander their
ruins in search of foes, and divinely inspired beasts
still hunt humanoid prey of all kinds.
Like I said, Rhenge is not for the timid, nor for
those who fear the creatures that stir within the
dark. No, Rhenge is for those with spirit, with grit,
with the unshakeable resolve to continue on. It is a
world barely holding itself together, a world of
desperate peoples standing steadfast in the face of

PART I

WELCOME TO RHENGE
Gehenna hacked at the vines in her way, sweat drenching her sunburned brow. She and her brother had been chopping their way
through the wilderness for weeks, searching for the site of a rumored Marble Age ruin.

e
“How much farther?” Julian asked, hobbling along in her wake. A Lust-infected wolf – a blood fang – had been tracking
them for miles, and last night it had finally grown close enough to strike.
She stopped, frustrated, and took a deep breath. “Let me see it,” she said, nodding to his leg.
Her brother found a spot on a fallen tree, and carefully rolled up the right leg of his breeches. Beneath them, she saw nothing
pl
but bloody bandages, a makeshift tourniquet ripped from her brother’s cloak. The fang had sliced open his leg with its diseased
claws, leaving deep, excruciating gashes from the outside of his knee to the top of his hip. She was proud of him, in a sick way,
for having withstood the pain for this long.
She slung around her pack, and dug for her herbalism kit.
“Can we please turn back?” he asked, anticipating the pain. “Or stop, at least?”
She pulled out a small wooden box, a single red cross painted upon its lid, and looked him in the eye. “Is this what Father
would have wanted?” she asked. “No,” she said, answering for him. “He would have wanted us to continue, whatever the cost.
m

He would have wanted us to find it.”

Her brother opened his mouth to protest, but his words, as ineffective as they may have been against her raw determination,
were cut short. In the distance, they could hear the howl of a wolf – and then another, and another, and another. The fang they
thought they had killed had found its pack, and indeed, had not been killed at all.
