CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

I. Definition of Curriculum
 The term was used to the course of study, a teacher’s guide which contains
suggestions for instructional objectives, teaching and learning activities and
instructional materials.
 The term has also been used in reference to the program of study, example of
which is the curriculum for given college degree program where the various
subjects or courses to be taken in the 1st and 2nd semesters of the first curriculum
years for those off succeeding curriculum years are listed.
 The term was taken to mean the planned learning outcomes which the teacher
seeks to attain through instruction.
 The term refers to all of the planned experiences of the learner, whether in
school or out of the school for which the school is responsible. (Under this
definition, curricular or co-curricular, inside or outside of the school). All
learning activities should be under the jurisdiction and responsibility of the
school, and are planned, directed and carried out for the purpose of promoting
the growth and development of the learner.
 Curriculum is basically what happens to student’s as a result of what teachers
do.
 The Curriculum includes all the experiences of the learners for which the school
should accept responsibility. It is the program used by the school as means of
accomplishing its purposes.
 Direct teaching in the classroom is a part of the curriculum since this
presumably have been planned by the school to help achieve certain educational
objectives.
 School services such as libraries, health services, guidance and counseling etc.
are parts of the curriculum.
 Curriculum is viewed as all the learning experiences of the child under the
auspices of the school. In short, the curriculum is the total environment planned
by the school.

II. Determinants of the Curriculum


 Education has the two-fold function of developing the individual human being
and developing the society.
 The Curriculum for Filipino education is anchored on three fundamental bases:
a. The Philosophical Bases- pertains to goals and objectives. Goal are general
statements of purpose. Goals give direction to policy making, to the
identification of specific contributions that the various areas of the
curriculum can make to their attainment.
b. The Sociological basis of the curriculum has reference to Filipino life- its
problems, its conditions, its changes and development. Example “Kilusang
Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran”
c. The Psychological Basis of the Curriculum- pertains to the nature of the
learner that is, the Filipino learner- the learning process and the learning
situation.
 Its essential that educators know the ways in which Filipino children and youth
grow, develop and learn for it is in knowing that understanding is achieved.
 Understanding, in turn, is a vital ingredient in the facilitation of learning which
is the teacher’s primary functions.
 The Psychological basis of the curriculum has 3 components- the nature of the
learner, the learning process, and the learning situation.
III. What is Curriculum Planning?
 It is a continues process which involves activities characterized by
interrelationships among individual and groups as they work together in
studying, planning, developing, improving the curriculum which is the total
environment planned by school.
 Curriculum Planning includes the identification or formulation of broad goals
and specific objectives based on assessment of conditions and foundation areas,
the planning of content, strategies and pupils’ evaluation to meet theses goals
and objectives, with attention given to analysis and adaptation of curriculum
plans or materials developed outside the school or school system; the
implementation of curriculum designs, and the evaluation and modification of
curriculum designs.
 Curriculum planning also occurs when school facilities plan to fit a new
programs’ to existing ones, and as a teacher’s responsible work together and
individually to arrange specific learning situations for the pupils they teach.
 Curriculum planning is the process of preparing for the duties of teaching,
deciding upon goals and emphases, determining curriculum content, selecting
learning resources and classroom procedures, evaluating progress and looking
towards next steps.
IV. What is Curriculum Development?
 It is defined as the process of selecting, organizing, executing and evaluating
learning experiences on the basis of the needs, abilities and interests of learners
and the nature of the society or community.
 Curriculum development takes into consideration the following factors: 1. The
nature of society which includes the cultural heritage, the needs and demands as
well as the economic, social, political, cultural, moral and other problems of the
people; 2. The interests, the needs, previous experiences and problems of the
learners; 3. The educational and psychological principles based on the findings
of scientific studies and experimentation.
 Curriculum development is a cooperative venture among teachers, supervisor,
curriculum expert, learners, parents and non-school people.
V. What is Curriculum Laboratory
 It is a place or workshop where curriculum materials are gathered and used by
teachers or learners of curriculum while Resource Unit is a collection or
suggested learning activities and materials organized around a given topic or
area which a teacher might utilize in planning, developing and evaluating a
learning unit.
 It consists of the following parts:
 Introduction or short explanation of the importance of the topic.
 Objectives or anticipated outcomes
 Content of the unit
 Unit activities
 Evaluation
 Bibliography of useful materials
VI. What is a Course Study?
 It is an official guide prepared for use by the administrations, supervisors and
teachers of a particular school or school system as an aid to teaching a given
subject or areas of study for a given level or grade, combination of grades or
other designated class or group of learners. It usually includes the following:
1. Aims of the course
2. The expected outcomes
3. The scope and nature of materials to be studied
4. Suitable instructional aids
5. Textbooks
6. Supplementary activities
7. Teaching Methods
8. Techniques of evaluation of achievements.
