Updated Sample Problem 2 On Mass Weight

This document provides information about calculating the total mass of a 4-story reinforced concrete building. The building has a typical column and beam section throughout with 3 grids spaced 4.5m apart on each floor. Each floor is 4m tall for a total height of 16m. The problem provides the member sizes, floor area, dead loads from finishes and framing, and live load for storage. The solution calculates the self-weight of the structural elements and superimposed dead loads level by level before summing to get the total mass of 2,587.27KN.

SAMPLE PROBLEM #1 (updated 2-27-21)

A typical 2nd to 4th floor SMRF reinforced concrete structure shall be used as office building at 2nd and 3rd level
and as storage at 4th floor level. The columns and beams have typical cross section throughout the height of the building.
There are three grids at both horizontal projections spaced at 4.5m and the floor to floor height is 4.0m.
Assumed all gridlines are along the centerline of columns and beams. Floor area/level=81 m²

ELEV. PLAN
GIVEN:
Typical section: columns 400x400mm
beams 300x400mm
#
suspended slab 150mm thick 3
Dead Load: (see NSCP Section 204)
floor topping for all levels 50mm thick 3
floor finishes for 2nd and 3rd floor only 19mm thick ceramic tiles 2
ceiling for ground, 2nd and 3rd floor only gypsum board, 15mm thick 3
metal channels for the ceiling joist 0.10 KN/m2 3
assumed weight of roof framing incl roof beams 2.5 KN/m2
Live Load for storage (see NSCP Section 205) 6.0 KN/m2

Assumed weight of concrete 23.6 KN/m3

Neglect weight of perimeter walls

REQUIRED:
CALCULATE THE TOTAL MASS "W" of the building in KN

SOLUTION:
Recap: Mass Weight "W" = Weight of Structure (Selfweight) + Superimposed Load (SDL)

Selfweight (weight of main resisting elements)

(0.4x0.4)(9)(16)(23.6) = 543.74
(0.3x0.4)(8.2)(6)(4)(23.6) = 557.34 1,101.08

SDL
(0.15)(4.2)(4.2)(4)(3)(23.6) = 749.35 Length of beams = 4.1 m
(0.05)(81)(23.6)(3) = 286.74 slab dimension = 4.2 X 4.2m
(0.019)(81)(23.6)(2) = 72.64 Floor area per level = 81 m²
(15)(0.008)(81)(3) = 29.16
(0.10)(81)(3) = 24.30
(2.5)(81) = 202.50
(6)(81)(0.25) = 121.50 1,486.19 KN

TOTAL MASS WEIGHT = 2,587.27 KN
